Bearcat bats come alive in doubleheader split at Bethany

BETHANY, W.V. (Apr. 2)- The Saint Vincent baseball team split a President's Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bethany, falling in game one 10-6 and winning game two by a large 17-1 margin.
 
In game one the Bearcats gave up nine runs in the third inning and attempted a late comeback scoring six runs between the sixth and ninth inning but it wasn't enough as the Bison came away with the win. In the run-rule shortened game two the Bearcats scored 17 runs on 18 hits and held the Bison to just one run in route to the PAC win.
 
Game 1- Bethany 10, Saint Vincent 6
It was a big game at the plate for Cameron Hyde as he went 3-3 with three RBI's in the loss. Derek Hald and Billy Perroz each had multi-hit games as well, with each recording two hits. Hald added a run scored and RBI in the loss as well for the Bearcats.
 
Dylan Schmude, Alex Hess, Dimitri Gary, and Owen Kitts all had one hit each for Saint Vincent. Gary's hit was a two-run homer in the three run ninth inning for the Bearcats.
 
Sean McAleer took the loss on the mound for Saint Vincent, pitching 2.2 innings giving up the nine runs, all in the third inning, while striking out two batters and walking three. The Saint Vincent bullpen was strong in the loss as the combination of Tristan Bedillion, Austin Tirpak, Joshua Dailey, and Andrew Stano pitched 5.1 innings, giving up just one run on five hits.
 
After a scoreless first and second inning, the Bison struck first in the third inning with the big nine run inning. Bethany scored their nine runs on seven hits in the inning to take a 9-0 lead.
 
The nine run lead for the Bison would hold for the next couple of innings, until the Bearcats started to chip away. In the top of the sixth, Saint Vincent finally got on the board as Hyde recorded his first of three hits, driving in Vincent Amatucci on an RBI-single to make the score 9-1.
 
In the seventh, Bethany scored another run to cut take a 10-1 lead but the Bearcats wouldn't go down without a fight. SVC scored two runs in the eighth inning on a Hald RBI-single and another Hyde RBI single to left field to cut the Bison lead to 10-3.
 
The Saint Vincent pen held the Bison scoreless in the bottom of the eighth and scored three runs on four hits in the ninth but it wasn't enough as Bethany secure the 10-6 win. Saint Vincent scored their three runs in the ninth inning on the two-run homer from Gary and another RBI single by Hyde.
 
Game 2- Saint Vincent 17, Bethany 1
The Saint Vincent bats came alive in game two. Eight different Bearcats recorded multi-hit games in the 17-hit offensive explosion for Saint Vincent.
 
The Bearcats scored nine runs in the first two innings, scoring five in the first inning and four in the second inning. The Bearcats added eight more in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring two runs in the fourth and six in the fifth inning.
 
Saint Vincent had eight different players record hits, including six of those eight players with multi-hit games. Zack Vonstein recorded a game-high four hits with six RBI's as well in his five plate appearances. Vonstein also scored one run for the Bearcats as well.
 
Dalton Nicklow and Perroz each had three hits, with Nicklow going 3-4 with three RBI's and four runs scored and Perroz going 3-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored, including a two-run homer in the second inning.
 
Connor Bannias and Jordan Sabol both added two hits for Saint Vincent in the victory. Bannias also had three RBI's and three runs scored, while Sabol knocked in one RBI and scored three runs as well.
 
Jeremy Kreuzwieser recorded his second win of the season on the mound for the Bearcats. Kreuzwieser pitched five innings, giving up the one run on just two hits, while striking out two batters and walking two as well. Nate Davis pitched one inning in relief giving up one hit and striking out two. Joseph Burke also pitched an inning in relief for Saint Vincent giving up two hits, while striking out one batter in his lone inning of work.
 
In the first inning, Perroz knocked in Gary on an RBI-double to get Saint Vincent on the board. Nicklow reached on an error by the shortstop as Perroz scored to increase the SVC lead to 2-0. Bannias followed with a two-RBI double that scored Nicklow and Sabol as the scored moved to 4-0. Vonstein rounded out the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to center field that scored Bannias to give SVC a 5-0 lead.
 
Perroz launched his two-run homer to left that score L.J. Evans in the second inning, increasing the SVC lead to 7-0. Vonstein followed with a two-RBI double to center field that scored Bannias and Nicklow as SVC broke the game open up 9-0.
 
After a quiet third inning, SVC added two more in the fourth inning. Nicklow knocked in Sabol with an RBI single and Vonstein hit in Nicklow on and RBI single to center field as Saint Vincent led 11-0.
 
The Bearcats offense wasn't done yet as they plated six more runs in the fifth. Sabol, Nicklow, and Bannias all recorded RBI singles in the inning. Casey Jones added an RBI double and Vonstein had a two-RBI double as Saint Vincent all but secured the win up 17-0.
 
Bethany plated their lone run in the bottom of the fifth but the Bearcats still came out on top with the 17-1 win.
 
Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday, April 4 when they travel to LaRoche to take on the Red Hawks in a non-conference game. First pitch for the single nine-inning game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at La Roche.
