Bearcats breeze past Penn State Mont Alto in 7-0 win

LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 14)- The Saint Vincent men's soccer team used seven different goal scorers to breeze past Penn State Mont Alto 7-0 on Thursday evening at UPMC Field.

The seven Saint Vincent goals are the most the Bearcats have scored in single game since September 16, 2021, when they defeated La Roche 10-1. The win also snaps a two-game losing streak for SVC.

Saint Vincent scored two goals in the first half and five in the second half to cruise to the victory. Antonio Mendes and David Rahaman scored the two first half goals. Jose Hurtado, Javier Torres, Kelvin Aguilar-Contreras, Benjamin Edwards, and Javier Tinoco were the five goal scorers in the second half. Edwards, Tinoco, Torres, and Aguilar-Contreras' goals were the all the first of their career.

Hurtado, Aguilar-Contreras, and Tinoco all recorded assists as well in the win for SVC. Cameron Mulvanny recorded two assists, while Andres Mateos Carrion added one assist as well. Kameron Rock played all 90 minutes in net picking up the win, recording two saves in route to the shutout.

As a team, Saint Vincent outshot the Lions 38-3 with 13 of the Bearcats shots being on goal. Two of the three Mont Alto shots were on goal. The Bearcats recorded ten corner kicks, while shutting the Lions out in that category. SVC tallied nine fouls, compared to six by the Lions.

It was all Bearcats from the jump. SVC scored their first goal just over four minutes into the match as Mendes scored his first of the season on an assist by Hurtado to give Saint Vincent a 1-0 lead.

After a rare 24-minute scoring drought for the Bearcats, Rahaman scored his first of the season in the 28th minute on the first of Mulvanny's two assists, increasing the SVC lead. Despite a few more scoring opportunities for Saint Vincent in the half, the score remained 2-0 at the halftime break.

The Bearcats came out on the attack once again in the second half, scoring their first goal of the half in the 58th minute when Hurtado scored his second of the season on an assist from Aguilar-Contreras, moving the score to 3-0.

Eight minutes later Torres scored on an assist from Mateos Carrion to give the Bearcats a 4-0 lead in the 66th minute. The Bearcats added another one in the 68th minute when Aguilar-Contreras scored an unassisted goal increasing the lead to 5-0.  In the 72nd minute, Edwards scored on an assist from Tinoco to move the lead to 6-0.

SVC wasn't done yet as Tinoco added the Bearcats their final goal of the match in the 78th minute on an assist from Mulvanny.

Netochi Ibe, Oziel Bonola-Soriano, Eddie Anderson, Jalani Campbell, and Mattia Speretta each recorded shots in the win too.

Coming off the bench, Mariano Jiminez recorded two shots on goal, Ben Bethke added two shots, one of those being on goal as well. Erwin Suarez and Brandyn Brock each recorded two shots as well, while Alex Saldanha tallied one shot.

The Bearcats will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to take on Penn College on Saturday, September 16. The match at Penn is Saint Vincent's final non-conference match before they begin PAC play on September 20 against Westminster. The match at Penn is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
