CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 2) – Freshman
Mattia Speretta's goal in the 84th minute lifted the Saint Vincent College men's soccer team to a 1-0, season-opening victory at Wilson College.
The Bearcats (1-0) dominated the stats sheet for the bulk of the game, holding a 15-6 edge in shots and a 4-2 margin in corner kicks, but were unable to find the net until Speretta's game-winner, off an assist from
Ethan Bridges.
Freshman
Grant Archuleta made five saves in goal to earn the shutout win in his collegiate debut.
Saint Vincent controlled play early on, peppering Wilson with six shots over the game's first 15 minutes, but were unable to cash in, with Phoenix keeper Logan Neves making a pair of early saves.
The Bearcats would continue to own possession throughout the first half, outshooting the Phoenix 9-1 over the frame.
With 6:58 left in the second half, the Bearcats snuffed out a Wilson free kick, with Archuleta making his third save of the game. SVC quickly advanced up the field, with a long lead pass from Bridges finding Speretta, who buried his first career goal to give the Bearcats the late lead.
Wilson looked to make a final push, but Archuleta made a pair of saves of the final three minutes to preserve the clean sheet and seal the victory.
Eight SVC players combined for the team's 15 shots, with Speretta leading both sides with five attempts and
Jose Hurtado,
Giuseppe Loiacono and
Cade Coldiron each posting two shots.
The Bearcats will now have a quick turnaround, as they will open the home campaign on Sunday, Sept. 3, with a 3 p.m. non-conference match against Bridgewater College at UPMC Field.
