LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 3)- The Saint Vincent men's soccer team was defeated 3-0 by Bridgewater in the Bearcats 2023 home opener on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Bridgewater used one goal in the first half and two in the second half to down the Bearcats on their home turf.
Â
It was a very defensive minded first 40 minutes at UPMC Field as neither team was able to find the back of the net to break the scoreless game. The Eagles controlled the ball in their offensive zone for the majority of those first 40-minutes, but the Bearcats defense held strong to keep the score tied.
Â
The Bearcats defense only held for so long as Bridgewater's Lestath Savage scored his first of two goals in the 42
nd minute to give Bridgewater a 1-0 lead, breaking the scoreless tie and that would be the score heading into the halftime break.
Â
Shots were fairly even in the half, despite Bridgewater controlling ball, as the Eagles held a slight 3-2 advantage heading into the halftime break. The Bearcats recorded two corner kicks compared the Bridgewater's one in the half.
Â
SVC committed six fouls and the Eagles committed four in the opening half of play.
Â
In the second half, it was much of a similar story as Bridgewater possessed the ball for the majority of the half. Three minutes into the half, Savage scored his second of the game, this one coming on an assist from Riley Queen to increase the Eagles lead to 2-0.
Â
Ten minutes later, John Meier found the back of the net for the Eagles in the 48
th minute to increase the lead to 3-0 and that would remain the score the rest of the way.
Â
The Bearcats tallied four shots over the course of the game, with
Javier Tinoco,
Jalani Campbell,
Oziel Bonola-Soriano, and
Mariano Jiminez recording the shots for SVC.
Â
Grant Archuleta took the loss in net, making three saves, while also allowing three goals as well.
Â
Saint Vincent will enjoy the next couple of days off before heading to Penn State-Altoona for a non-conference matchup against the Lions on Wednesday, September 6. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Altoona.
