Late goals spark SVC comeback in PAC opener

LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 20)- The Saint Vincent men's soccer team used two late second half goals, rallying to a 2-1 victory against Westminster.

The win for the Bearcats is their first win in 14 tries against the Titans since joining the President's Athletic Conference in 2010. Last season the Bearcats played to a 2-2 draw against Westminster in New Wilmington almost a year ago to the day on September 21.

David Rahaman scored the tying goal in the 82nd minute and freshman Mattia Speretta scored the game-winner in the 85th minute to give the Bearcats the victory. Rahaman's goal was his second of the year and Speretta's was his third of the year and second game-winning goal of the season for Saint Vincent.

Saint Vincent goaltender, Kameron Rock was a critical piece in the win for the Bearcats. Rock played all 90 minutes, making six saves, including a critical save on a breakaway opportunity midway through the second half for Westminster.

The first half was evenly played, but the Titans scored the first goal as Marc Esqueda scored his third of the season in the 19th minute to give Westminster the early lead. Both defenses stepped up for the remaining 25 minutes and change in the half.

Both the Bearcats and Titans were presented opportunities to find the back of the net but neither was able to do so. Westminster outshot Saint Vincent 7-5 in the opening half. Rock made two of his six saves for SVC in the first half. Both teams had one corner kick each and the Bearcats committed just three fouls, compared to four by the Titans in the half.

In the second half, both defenses stepped up as both teams had scoring opportunities. The first legitimate scoring opportunity in the half came from Westminster as a Saint Vincent turned the ball over, giving the Titans a breakaway. That's when Rock stepped up to make the big save for SVC to keep the score at 1-0.

After the next several minutes remained scoreless, Rahaman finally got the Bearcats on the board. Rahaman scored on a ball passed right in the front of the goal by Eduardo Richa to tie the match up at 1-1 with just eight minutes remaining in the half.

A little over two-minutes later Speretta scored the game-winner on a beautiful duo-assist from Antonio Mendes and Oziel Bonola-Soriano to give SVC the 2-1 lead. The Bearcats defense sealed the victory as the Titans brought the ball into their offensive zone but were unable to produce any scoring opportunities.

Overall, SVC was outshot by the Titans 15-10, with seven of Westminster's shots being on goal and five for Saint Vincent. Westminster made three saves, with SVC making six. Corner kicks were 3-2 in favor of the Titans. Westminster also committed 13 fouls, while the Bearcats recorded just seven in the win.

Logan Kremposky also recorded two shots on goal for SVC, while Kevin Amouzou also recorded a shot on goal for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats look to keep the momentum rolling as they travel to Washington and Jefferson on Saturday, September 23 for another PAC matchup. The match against the Presidents is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in Washington, Pa.
