LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 30) – The Saint Vincent women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to three games with a 3-0 triumph over visiting Geneva in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup at UPMC Field.
A goal late in the first half by
Olivia Toomey proved to be the game-winner, before
Emma Koller continued her staggering week with a pair of insurance goals in the second half, as Saint Vincent (6-3-1, 2-1-1) handed Geneva (3-5-1, 2-1) its first PAC defeat of the season.
The Bearcats outshot Geneva 15-7 on the afternoon and doubled-up the Golden Tornadoes on corner kicks, 6-3.
Madison Arnold went the distance in goal and made two saves to earn her fourth shutout victory of the season.
Saint Vincent controlled possession for much of the first half, taking nine of the game's first 12 shots over the opening 30 minutes of play, but was unable to net its first goal until 3:49 left in the half, when Toomey gathered the ball on the sideline and floated a shot from 30 yards out over the leaping keeper and into the net for her first career tally.
The lead would remain 1-0 heading at the intermission, as the hosts closed the half with a 10-3 advantage in shots and did not yield a Geneva shot on goal.
The Bearcats doubled-up the lead with just over 30 minutes left in regulation when Koller dribbled through a pair of defenders to the middle of the field and sent a turning shot from 20 yards out just inside the crossbar to push the lead to 2-0.
The Golden Tornado offense upped its pressure over the next several minutes but the Bearcat defense held them at bay, with Arnold making both of her saves in a 10-minute span between the 64th and 74th minutes.
Koller's second tally of the afternoon, scored with 4:44 left in regulation, was set up by some nifty passing by her teammates, as
Jude Galvin corralled the ball in traffic near the top of the box and sent a pass through a pair of defenders to
Brooke Garman on the goal line. Garman then one-touched it onto the doorstep to Koller, who tapped it home for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
It marked Koller's second straight multi-goal game, after the freshman tied a 23-year-old team record with four goals in SVC's 4-4 draw at Waynesburg three days prior.
Seven players accounted for SVC's 15 shots on the day, with
Tanisha Grewal leading the way with six attempts, and Kollar four.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 4, hosting a 3 p.m. non-conference fray against Penn College at UPMC Field.
