Bearcats cruise to sweep against Penn State-Shenango

LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 5)- The Saint Vincent women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep in a win against Penn State-Shenango on Tuesday night.
 
The Bearcats won with a balanced attack as five players picked up five or more kills in the three-set sweep. Kaelyn Staples led the way with a game-high eight kills, while also scooping up nine digs.
 
Luciana Polk picked up seven kill, a game-high five service aces, and recorded 14 digs as well. Freshman, Anna Grandas recorded six kills, three service aces, and added five digs. Jessica Hughes recorded five kills and Alexis DiFuccia tallied five kills as well, while also picking up three blocks and three digs.
 
Stacie Ramos tallied a game-high 16 digs in the win as well. Camryn Berdysz recorded three kills and Madie Eagler added a game-high 18 assists. Coming off of the bench, Sani Jones had five assists and Emma Harclerode recorded two service aces in the win as well for Saint Vincent.
 
It was all Bearcats from the jump, as Saint Vincent scored the first five points of the set and 19 of the first 24 as they held a commanding 19-5 lead. SVC closed the first set on a 6-2 run on kills by Grandas and Staples, mixed in with an attack error on the Lions and three service aces, two coming from Polk and one from Harclerode.
 
Saint Vincent opened the second set just as they did the first. The Bearcats scored the first three points of the set and 15 of the first 20, taking a 15-5 lead. Penn State-Shenango went on a 6-2 run to cut the SVC lead to 17-11.
 
Saint Vincent answered, scoring four of the next five points on two errors by the Penn State-Shenango mixed between a kill from Grandas and one from Staples as well as the Bearcats led 21-12. The Lions battled back once again to cut the lead to 23-17 but SVC closed it out.
 
Saint Vincent closed the set out with two kills coming from Polk and Berdysz to win the set 25-17, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Penn State-Shenango scored the first two points of the third set, but SVC stormed back scoring 11 of the next 12 to take an 11-3 lead. The Bearcats increased that lead to 16-4 after four straight points coming on an attack error by Shenango, followed by a kill from Polk and two service aces from Grandas.
 
SVC closed the set out, outscoring the Lions 9-7 over the remaining points, scoring the final two points on a kill from Staples and an attack error by Shenango to win the set 25-11, completing the 3-0 sweep.
 
The Bearcats recorded 34 kills as a team, compared to just 18 from the Lions. SVC also had 15 service aces and six blocks, shutting out Shenango in both of those categories as well. SVC also scooped up 60 digs compared to 53 from the Lions.
 
Ella Stewart led the way for Shenango with nine kills. Kiara Varion added 14 assists and Emma Murdock recorded 15 digs for Penn State-Shenango as well.
 
The Bearcats return to action on Thursday, September 7, traveling to La Roche University for a non-conference matchup. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at La Roche.
