LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 12) – The Saint Vincent men's soccer team scored a convincing 4-0 victory over Waynesburg University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup at UPMC Field.
Mattia Speretta scored two goals and added an assist to lead a Saint Vincent (2-6-6, 1-3-1 PAC) offense that racked up 21 shots and produced its second-highest scoring output of the season.
Saint Vincent was on the attack from the start, outshooting Waynesburg 5-1 over the opening 20 minutes. With just over 20 minutes left in the half,
Alfie Aldridge stripped a Waynesburg attacker deep in the Yellow Jacket offensive end. The ball would deflect to
Oziel Bonola-Soriano, who sent a long lead pass up the center of the field to a streaking Speretta, who outraced a pair of defenders to connect on the breakaway goal to give SVC a 1-0 lead with 19:55 left in the half.
Fourteen minutes later, Speretta struck again thanks to another heads-up SVC defensive play.
Cade Coldiron intercepted a Waynesburg clearing attempt fired a quick pass to Speretta on the right wing. The sophomore promptly gathered it and sent in a right-footed blast just inside the crossbar to double-up the Bearcat lead with 5:34 remaining in the half.
Both teams saw scoring chances over the final four minutes of the half, with SVC keeper
Kameron Rock producing his third save of the day with 5:12 left, before an attempt by Bonola-Soriano was saved with 1:41 to go.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Bearcats upped their lead after converting on another breakaway. From just inside midfield, Aldridge sent a through ball toward the box, where Bonola-Soriano gathered it in stride, split a pair of defenders, and buried it into the net with a left-handed shot placed just inside the far post to make it 3-0.
The Bearcats added another insurance marker with 17:37 left. Speretta controlled the ball deep inside the offensive zone and after tiptoeing on the end line toward the goal, he sent a quick pass into the goal mouth, where
Bruno Hurtado tapped it home to make it 4-0 and close out the day's scoring.
Nine different players accounted for Saint Vincent's 21 shots, led by six attempts apiece by Speretta and Bonola-Soriano. Rock went the distance in goal and produced six saves for his second shutout of the season.
The Bearcats will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 15, hosting PAC foe Washington & Jefferson for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff under the UPMC Field lights.
