LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 15) – Behind a pair of first half goals off of set pieces less than a minute apart, the Saint Vincent women's soccer team stretched its winning streak to eight games and remained perfect in Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a 2-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson at UPMC Field.
The Bearcats moved to 12-1-1 overall and 6-0 in PAC play with the win, while the Presidents fall to 4-8-2 overall and 1-4-1 in league play.
Saint Vincent scored the game's first goal at 8:21 of the first half, when
Cori Bieber's free kick from 25 yards out made its way through traffic and to a waiting
Tanisha Grewal in the goal mouth who directed it home for a 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats got the ball right back after Bieber's goal, earning a corner kick after promptly setting up another scoring chance deep in its offensive end.
Addie Fisher lofted the corner onto the doorstep, where
Emma Koller emerged from traffic to tap it into the net for her eighth goal of the season, doubling up the SVC advantage.
The SVC defense then held the Presidents at bay for the remainder of the half, surrendering just two shots over the final 32 minutes of the first frame.
SVC looked primed to add to the lead in the opening minutes of the second half, when another corner kick led to five shots in a 60-second span, with one hitting the post and another saved.
While they were unable to add another insurance goal, the Bearcat midfield and defensive units made the two-goal margin stand up, allowing only four shots over the game's final 40 minutes to post their seventh shutout win of the season.
For the game, Saint Vincent outshot W&J 12-8, with Bearcat keeper
Rilyn Warner stopping both President attempts on goal to earn the shutout win.
The Bearcats will return to action on Friday, Oct. 18, traveling to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, for a pivotal PAC matchup against Westminster. At 6-0, SVC holds a half-game lead over Westminster (5-0-1) atop the PAC standings.
