NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Oct. 18) – The Saint Vincent men's soccer team was defeated, 2-0, at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Westminster College on Friday evening.
After a scoreless and evenly played first half, Westminster scored a pair of goals 22 minutes apart in the second frame and then held off a late Saint Vincent charge down the stretch.
The two teams combined for six shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes. The Bearcats' first scoring chance came in the sixth minute, when
Cade Coldiron's attempt from just outside the top of the box was turned aside.
SVC jgoalkeeper
Kameron Rock then turned aside a pair of Westminster attempts over an 80-second span, before notching his third save of the half in the 16th minute on a shot from the left wing.
With just over 12 minutes left, the Bearcats drew a foul just outside of the goal box, but
Cameron Mulvanny's ensuing free kick was saved. Four minutes later, the Bearcats put together another sustained offensive attack, but
Javier Torres' header from the doorstep off of a cross was saved. It marked the final real scoring chance for either team, as the game entered the intermission scoreless.
Westminster opened the game's scoring five minutes into the second half on a goal by Mason Baldwin. The Titans looked to continue the offensive pressure, tallying two shots and two corner kicks over the next three minutes, but the Bearcat defense held strong, with Rock notching his fourth save of the game with 35 minutes left.
The Titans would add an insurance marker with 17:05 remaining on a rebound putback by Max Letchworth.
Saint Vincent then went on the attack, controlling possession for most of the game's final 15 minutes. With 11 minutes remaining, Mulvanny was stopped on a shot from 30 yards out, before
Oziel Bonola-Soriano narrowly missed off a free kick with 5:15 to go.
The Bearcats continued to control possession down the stretch, taking a pair of corner kicks in the 86th minute, before being granted a corner kick at midfield following a Westminster yellow card with 3:15 left. Rock took the kick, sending it into traffic in front of the net. Torres caught a piece of it and deflected it toward the goal, but it went just wide.
It marked the final scoring chance of the game for either squad, as the Titans managed to keep the Bearcats at bay over the final 2:30.
Saint Vincent ended the night owning a 14-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 margin over the second half. Mulvanny and
Bruno Hurtado shared the SVC team lead with three shots apiece, while Torres and Bonola-Soriano each took two attempts.
Rock totaled five saves.
Saint Vincent will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 22, welcoming PAC foe Grove City to UPMC Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
