Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Grewal's record-setting night leads Bearcats to victory

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 2) – Behind a record-setting performance from senior Tanisha Grewal, the Saint Vincent women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to seven games and remained perfect in Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a 2-0 victory over Bethany under the UPMC Field lights.

Grewal, the reigning PAC Offensive Player of the Week, scored both goals for the Bearcats while achieving a pair of major milestones. On her first tally of the game, scored with just over 18 minutes left in the first half, Grewal became just the third player in program history to eclipse 100 career points.

Her second goal was even more significant, as it marked the 45th of her career to break the previous program record for career goals set in 2008 by Kylie Simonini.

With the win, the Bearcats improved to 8-1-1 overall, matching the 2012 squad for the best start in program history, while SVC moved to 3-0 in PAC play for the first time since joining the conference in 2010.

Saint Vincent took four of the game's first six shots over the opening 22 minutes, but was kept off of the scoreboard until Grewal's strike in the 26th minute.

Following a Bethany foul deep inside the Bearcats' offensive third, Cori Bieber's free kick was lofted perfectly to the front of the goal mouth, where Grewal promptly deflected it into the cage to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.

Grewal's strike was the last real offensive chance for either team over the final 18 minutes of the half, as the Bearcats took the 1-0 lead into the intermission. Saint Vincent outshot Bethany 7-5 in the opening frame.

Bethany controlled possession in the early stages of the second half, with SVC keeper Rilyn Warner's second save of the night preserving the one-goal lead in the 54th minute.

The field began to again tilt in favor of the Bearcats over the next several minutes, before Grewal's record-breaker with 26:50 left in regulation.

With Bethany possessing the ball in its defensive end, Grewal stepped in front of a pass from a defender to the keeper, controlled the ball, and let loose a spinning, left-footed shot that rolled into the cage untouched to make it 2-0.

Saint Vincent would control play over the final 20 minutes, limiting Bethany to just two shots, with Warner making two saves, to preserve the two-goal victory.

For the game, Saint Vincent outshot Bethany 12-9, while the Bearcats had eight corner kicks to the Bisons' three. Grewal led SVC with eight shots, while Warner made four saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season.

Saint Vincent will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, traveling to the southeastern corner of the state to take on Neumann University in the final non-conference match of the season, slated to begin at 1 p.m.
