Women's soccer suffers home defeat

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 23) – The Saint Vincent women's soccer team suffered its second straight defeat on Wednesday night, falling 4-2 to Presidents' Athletic Conference co-leading Grove City College at UPMC Field.

With the defeat, Saint Vincent falls to 12-3-1 overall and 6-2 in the PAC, while the Wolverines improve to 10-3-2 overall and 7-0-1 in conference play.

The Wolverines scored the lone goal in the first half, when Tori Stevenson sent home a cross from 15 yards out in the 11th minute. After Stevenson's early strike, play evened out, with Grove City taking a slim 6-5 advantage in shots into the intermission.

The two squads traded scoring chances early in the second half, with SVC keeper Rilyn Warner making a pair of saves over the first seven minutes, while the Bearcats saw attempts from Annie Van Horn and Emma Koller turned aside.

The Wolverines added onto their lead in the 62nd minute on a Natalie Merrick goal off of a corner kick, before the Bearcats answered right back less than 90 seconds later. Tanisha Grewal broke loose for a breakaway and buried her 11th goal of the season to trim the gap to 2-1 with 26:57 remaining.

With 19:29 left, Grove City answered back, when Merrick scored her second goal of the night, off of a corner from Natalie Giunta, to make it 3-1.

Six minutes later, Saint Vincent again trimmed the gap to one. With just over 13 minutes left, Madisen Geesaman was sprung free for a breakaway into the box and drew a foul from behind, leading to a penalty kick. Grewal took the PK and buried it into the lower corner of the net for her second goal of the night to pull to within 3-2.

SVC would get no closer, as Grove City's Emma Herrmann netted an insurance goal with 2:34 remaining to account for the final score.

Grove City ended the night with an 18-13 margin in shots. Grewal paced SVC with three attempts, while Geesaman and Koller each took two shots.

Warner recorded four saves in goal.

The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 26, traveling to Pittsburgh for their final road game of the regular season, a 3:30 p.m. bout against Chatham.
