Bearcats finish second in La Roche Tournament

TEAM RESULTS

The SVC women's bowling team finished first overall in total pins, but lost in the championship match of the Unicorn Classic, hosted by La Roche University at Deer Lakes Bowl in Cheswick, Pennsylvania.

The tournament featured five matches consisting of five Baker team games each.  For the afternoon, SVC averaged 187, with Muskingum University finishing 158 pins behind the Bearcats for an average of 180.6.  In all, ten teams competed.

Saint Vincent opened the day with games of 190, 196 and 200 against D'Youville University, opening a 108-pin lead.  The team went on to win by a score of 927-753.  Up next was a matchup with host La Roche, and the Bearcats led from start to finish, winning 879-626.

In the third round, the Bearcats squared off against reigning conference champion William Smith College, and the match was close throughout.  WSC won the first game, 170-159, then took game two by a 199-180 tally.  SVC once again fell in game three, 181-172, and trailed by 37 pins going into the fourth game.  The Bearcats bounced back with a 39-pin victory, 227-188, leaving the match tied with one game remaining.  The Bearcats didn't miss a pin, with all strikes and spares en route to a solid 201 game, but William Smith rose to the occasion as well, shooting a 216 to win the match by a score of 954-939.

Up next was a match against Pitt-Bradford, and the Bearcats responded with their best Baker set of the season.  SVC shot a 187 in the opening game, but UPB kept pace, shooting a 182.  SVC again narrowly won game two, 179-177, to lead by just 7 pins going to the third game.  SVC used a run of five consecutive strikes in game three to pull away to a 223-169 win, but yielded 10 pins in game fou as Bradford won 209-199.  With a 51-pin lead going into the final game, the Bearcats not only won the fifth game, but by shooting a 237 finished the match with a total of 1025 pins, just missing the school record for a five-game Baker set by one pin (1026).

With a 196-pin lead in the standings, the Bearcats were the #1 seed entering the championship match and faced off against non-NCAA member Muskingum University for the title.  The Muskies won the first game by a score of 188-178, but SVC captured game two by a 169-166 score.  Game three belonged to Muskingum as they won 225-184 to open a 48-pin lead, but the Bearcats bounced back to win the fourth game by 30 pins, 199-169.  However, SVC was unable to complete the comeback, falling in the final game 194-174 to settle for the runner-up position.

It marks the fourth time this year that the Bearcats have finished second in just six events.

For the day, Kaylie Kurland led the Bearcats with a per-game average of 212.4.  Rounding out the top five were teammates Brooke Street (191.1), Skyy Nicholls (190.2), Sabine Strickland (181.1), and Abby Justice (177.0).

Saint Vincent is now 19-9 on the season, and will return to action the weekend of November 16-17 for the first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference round robin of the season, as the team travels to Waterloo, New York.
