Women's Soccer Wins First PAC Playoff Match in Program History

LATROBE, Pa. (Nov. 2)- The Saint Vincent women's soccer team defeated Bethany 2-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Quarterfinals, advancing to the semifinals on Wednesday night.

The playoff win is the Bearcats first Presidents' Athletic Conference playoff win since they joined the conference in 2010.

Saint Vincent's Tanisha Grewal scored the Bearcats two goals, both of which came early in the first half, less than three minutes apart from each other. Bethany scored their goal early in the second half, but the Bearcats held the Bison off for the final 36-plus minutes of the second half to hang on for the victory.

Jordan Kirkwood and Cori Bieber both picked up assists on Grewal's goals. Grewal totaled five of the Bearcats 13 shots, including five of their seven shots on goal. Annie Van Horn added two shots on goal, while Kirkwood recorded three shots for SVC as well. Coming off of the bench, Brooke Garman recorded three shots, two of which were solid scoring opportunities late in the second half for the Bearcats.

Freshman Rilyn Warner was strong in net for Saint Vincent, picking up the win, while making six saves and allowing just one goal.

Grewal got the Bearcats on the board quickly, with her first goal coming just over eight minutes into the game. Kirkwood sent a ball towards the middle and after a fight for the ball, Grewal secured it and found the back of the net to give the Bearcats a quick 1-0 lead.

Grewal wasn't done yet, as she continued to attack on the offensive end. Just two and a half minutes after her first goal, she added another goal on a header off of a free kick from Bieber to give Saint Vincent a commanding 2-0 advantage.

SVC had a couple more chances in the opening half, as they possessed the ball in their offensive end for the majority of the half, but the 2-0 score would hold at halftime. The Bearcats outshot Bethany 8-2 in the half, while they lead in corner kicks by a 1-0 margin as well. Fouls were 7-4 in the opening half, with Bethany committing the seven.

In the second half, it was Bethany who came out on the attack. The Bison scored just nine minutes into the half with their goal coming in the 54th minute. Monica Bird scored off of her own rebound to cut the Saint Vincent lead to 2-1 with 36 minutes to go in the playoff match.

Over the next 36 minutes, both teams possessed the ball in their offensive ends and both had quality scoring opportunities. However, the Bearcats defense won the battle in the end, not allowing another goal to hang on for the 2-1 win to advance Saint Vincent in the PAC playoffs.

Saint Vincent outshot Bethany 13-8 over the course of the contest, while both teams recorded seven shots on goal. Corner kicks were 3-2 in favor of the Bison, while fouls were 12-11 with Bethany committing the 12 and Saint Vincent recorded 11.

Jordan Palmer, along with Bird led Bethany with two shots on goal each in the game. Hope Fair made four saves in net for the Bison.

The fourth-seeded Bearcats now advance to take on the top-seeded Westminster Titans in the PAC semifinals on Wednesday, November 6. The semifinal match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with the winner advancing to next Saturday's PAC Championship game.
