The Saint Vincent women's bowling team recorded one of the best efforts in program history, finishing third out of 38 top-level teams in the Tier 1 Collegiate Shoot-Out in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Bearcats set three school records on the second day of the event to jump from 16th place to 8th, the final spot to advance to the tournament semifinals.  In the first round, bowling in a group of four teams, the Bearcats placed first in their block, becoming one of four teams to advance to the Championship round.

SVC took the early lead after one game of the four-game match, but slipped to third place at the finish, just 38 pins away from tournament champion Saint Xavier, and 28 pins behind Mount Mercy, the third-ranked team in the nation.  Freshman Mareana Pilyih led the way in the finals with an average of 239.3, throwing strikes on 11 of 16 shots.  She was followed on the scoresheet by Sabine Strickland (198.6), Daphne Stuber (191.6), Brooke Street (191), Skyy Nicholls (188) and Kaylie Kurland (168.7).  As a team, the Bearcats averaged 196 in the championship round.

The weekend started with five Traditional games on Friday afternoon.  SVC finished game one with a team total of 877, an average of 175.4, with Nicholls leading the way with a  203, while Strickland added a 186.  The team was in 22nd place after the first game.

In game two, the Bearcats recorded one of their highest team totals of the year, with a 991 total (198.2 average).  Strickland (212), Nicholls (209) and Pilyih (206) all broke the 200 mark, while Kurland added a 182 and Stuber finished at 181.

Unfortunately, the Bearcats followed that effort with their lowest total of the weekend, an 819 game with Nicholls posting the top score (183).

The team bounced back in game four, shooting a 960 (192 average), with Nicholls (212) and Strickland (211) posting the top scores and moving the team up to 11th place.  However, the day ended with an 854 score, dropping the team to 16th place.  Nicholls (191) led the way.  For the afternoon, the Bearcats covered 4501 pins, an average of 180 per game.  Nicholls was the top performer, finishing 16th individually among the field of 282.

Entering the second day, which featured 16 Baker team games, the Bearcats were nearly 70 pins out of the top-10, and 196 pins away from eighth place, the final spot that would advance to the quarterfinals.

The Bearcats started the day with a four-game block of 731, an average of 182, which moved the team up one spot to 15th.

The second four-game block would prove to be the pivotal block of the day.  After starting the first game with two open frames in the first four shots, the Bearcats reeled off a school-record 30 consecutive marks (strikes or spares).  Game one ended with a 199, and the team followed with scores of 236 and 248, before finishing with a 190.  The four-game total of 873 (218.2 average) was a school record, and propelled the Bearcats into 9th place.  However, the team was still 64 pins away from the final playoff position.

In the third round, the team started with a 213, but followed with scores of 175 and 164, before bouncing back with a 201 in the final game.  The four-game total of 753 (188.2 average) kept the team in 9th and brought them within 34 pins of eighth place.

The team opened the final four-game set of the tournament with games of 186 and 187, before finishing strong, with games of 225 and 202 for a total of 800, an average of 200.  When the final scores were tallied, the Bearcats moved into eighth place, just 20 pins away from seventh, and 28 pins ahead of ninth, completing the near-200 pin comeback for the afternoon.  The team's average of 197.3 for the day was another school record.

Kurland led the way with an average of 203.4 for day two, followed by Strickland (201.3), Pilyih (194.5), Stuber (191.4), Brooke Street (185.7) and Nicholls (172.4).

The Bearcats will return to action at home the weekend of January 11-12, hosting the Greater Pittsburgh Collegiate Classic and Western PA Baker Shootout at Hillview Lanes in Greensburg.
