Bearcats Down Allegheny on the Road

MEADVILLE, Pa. (Feb. 14)- The Saint Vincent men's basketball team earned a 79-74 win on the road at Allegheny.

The Bearcats led by three at the half (39-36) after a late first half run and an early surge in the early portions of the second half was enough for SVC to earn the win.

Osyon Jones paced the Bearcats with a game-high 22 points, while Tayler McNeal added 17 points. Mike Iuzzolino scored 14 and Dev Ostrowski was the fourth Saint Vincent player to score in double figures with ten points.

Jaden Gales scored eight points, while Dillon Hod added four and Jovany Philistin and Corey Harden each scored a two-point basket as well.

It was a back-and-forth high scoring first ten minutes of the game. Allegheny scored the first four points of the contest, but the Bearcats answered on the other end on layup by Ostrowski first, followed by Iuzzolino to tie the game at 4-4.

Over the next few minutes, the teams continued to play even as the score remained tied at 19-19. The Gators took the first advantage of the game, going on a 10-5 run to take a 29-24 lead with 8:40 to play in the first half.

In the next five minutes, the Bearcats went on a 12-4 run to take a 36-33 lead with 3:22 remaining in the half. The Bearcats held Allegheny without a field goal for over five minutes of game time over the run.

Both teams played even over the remaining couple minutes of the half, as the Bearcats still led by three, 39-36 at the half.

The Bearcats were an efficient, 16-29 (55 percent) from the field and 3-6 from behind the arc in the half. Jones scored 13 of his points in the opening half, while Gales and McNeal scored seven and five for SVC in the half as well.

It was all Saint Vincent over the first ten minutes of the second half. SVC went on a 10-4 run to open the half, taking a nine-point lead at 49-40. Saint Vincent continued on the attack increasing their lead to ten at 59-49.

That's when the Gators started to crawl back into the game. The Gators went on a 13-6 run to cut the Saint Vincent lead to just three at 65-62 with 4:32 remaining in the game. On Allegheny's next trip down the court, the Gators buried a three to tie the game at 65.

Saint Vincent came down the court on their end, and Ostrowski buried a jumper inside the arc to give SVC the lead right back at 67-65 and the Bearcats never lost the lead from that point.

The Bearcats increased their lead to six at 73-67 after a three-pointer from Iuzzolino followed by a layup from McNeal on a second chance opportunity with 55 seconds remaining. After a couple of late three pointers from the Gators, the Bearcats closed out the win at the free throw line to seal the 79-74 win.

Saint Vincent shot 47 percent (31-65), while the Gators shot 49 percent (30-61 from the field). Both teams turned the ball over 14 times over the course of the game as well.

Saint Vincent concludes the regular season on Saturday, February 17, traveling to Franciscan. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Steubenville, Ohio.
