Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener at Mount Aloysius

CRESSON, Pa. (Feb. 21)- The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team was defeated 16-3 on the road at Mount Aloysius in the Bearcats season opener.
 
It was all Mounties, as they led the Bearcats 10-2 at the halftime break and continued the same effort in the second half, outscoring Saint Vincent 6-1 in the half.
 
Carolina Walters scored two goals and Luciana Polk scored for the Bearcats as well in the loss. Bailey Nicely picked up two assists, both coming on Walters goals.
 
Kyra Lipetzky took the loss in net, making ten saves for Saint Vincent.
 
Mount Aloysius scored the first goal of the game to put the Mounties up 1-0 just 50-seconds into the contest. Three minutes later, Walters answered with her goal on Nicely's assist to tie the contest up.
 
After the Mounties took the lead back at the 8:39 mark of the first quarter, they never lost the lead the rest of the way. In the second quarter, Katie Figinski of the Mounties had a string of five straight goals to increase the Mount Aloysius lead to 8-1.
 
Walters scored her second goal of the game and the Bearcats only goal of the second quarter midway through the quarter.
 
Over the next quarter and a half, the Mounties outscored the Bearcats 8-0 to increase their lead to 16-2. Polk ended the Bearcats scoring drought, scoring with 6:56 to go in the fourth quarter (16-3).
 
Both offenses went quiet over the final 6:56 of the contest as the Mounties handed the Bearcats the 16-3 defeat.
 
Mount Aloysius had 31 total shots, while the Bearcats recorded 12 shots of their own. The Bearcats made ten saves compared to the Mounties who made six saves. The Bearcats were also 9-17 on clear attempts.
 
Ground balls were 17-16 in favor of the Mounties and draw controls were 13-10 in favor of Mount Aloysius as well.
 
The Bearcats return home for their home opener on Saturday, February 24, when they take on Marietta. Opening face-off is scheduled for 11 a.m. at UPMC Field in Latrobe on Saturday.
