LATROBE, Pa. (March 13) – Visiting Oberlin College used a big second quarter run to defeat Saint Vincent 14-10 in non-conference lacrosse action at UPMC Field.
Leading 4-3 early in the second quarter, Saint Vincent saw Oberlin score six unanswered goals to take the lead for good, as the Bearcats' fourth quarter comeback ran out of time.
Liam McCall and
Jordan Billet each tallied two goals and two assists to lead the Saint Vincent offense, while
Caleb Hawkins and
Jacob Crumling each scored two goals apiece.
RJ Kenna and
Carter Haid added one goal each, while
Justin Wodarek tied for the team lead with two assists.
Owen Rogers also added one assist for SVC.
Defensively, Kenna,
AJ Bricker, and
Benjamin Wohlin each had three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while
Garrett Ritts made 11 saves in goal.
The Yeomen took a 1-0 lead with a goal 67 seconds into the first quarter, but the Bearcats promptly stormed back, with McCall scoring twice in a 40-second span to take a 2-1 lead with 12:23 left in the first quarter. After Oberlin answered with the next two goals, Billet scored his first tally of the day to tie the score at 3-3 with just over seven minutes left in the frame. After the furious start to the game, neither team would find the net for the remainder of the quarter, as the teams stayed deadlocked entering the second frame.
Fifty seconds into the second quarter, Crumling's first goal of the game gave the Bearcats a 4-3 lead. The Yeomen then seized the momentum, scoring six unanswered goals over the final 12 minutes to open up a 9-4 halftime lead.
Kenna's first goal of the season, assisted by Wodarek, pulled SVC to within 9-5 with 13:39 left in the third quarter, but the Yeomen answered right back to up their lead to six with the game's next two goals. Crumling and Hawkins were the next two goal-scorers, trimming the deficit to 11-7, but the Yeomen scored twice in the final 30 seconds of the quarter to take a 13-7 lead into the final 15 minutes.
Saint Vincent outscored Oberlin 3-1 in the final quarter, with goals from Billet, Haid, and Hawkins, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.
The Yeomen were led on the day by Solomon Brennan, who scored four goals, while Sean Obana scored two goals with three assists. Oberlin goalie Jake Pillsbury made 10 saves.
The Bearcats will now have a weeklong layoff before returning to non-conference action with a 7 p.m. tilt at Marietta College on Wednesday, March 20.
