LATROBE, Pa. (April 23) – The Saint Vincent men's tennis team opened the 2024 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament with a 5-2 victory in the quarterfinals over visiting Geneva College.
The third-seeded Bearcats improved to 15-6 on the season, tying a single-season program record for wins, and will now move on to the PAC semifinals at No. 2 Grove City on Thursday, April 25.
Along with extending their season, the Bearcats also exacted some revenge on the Golden Tornadoes, who defeated SVC by a 5-4 score three days prior in Latrobe.
The Bearcats fell into an early 1-0 hole after falling at No. 1 doubles, before the No. 2 tandem of freshmen
Braden Yokopenic and
Josh Havrilla evened the match with an 8-5 win.
SVC's No. 3 pairing of
Jack Citrone and
August Lawrence fell behind by scores of 3-1 and 6-5, before rallying to capture the final three games and earn an 8-6 win to put the hosts in front 2-1 heading into singles play.
Lawrence earned the Bearcats' third win of the afternoon by taking the No. 6 singles match by a 6-1, 6-2 score, before
Matthew Sadusky put SVC in front 4-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.
The GTs claimed the No. 1 singles match,
before Citrone clinched the match victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5.
The Bearcats will now prep for their third trip to the PAC semifinals in as many seasons, and will be gunning for their second-ever trip to the PAC title match.
