LATROBE, Pa. (Aug. 30) – The Saint Vincent women's soccer team opened the 2024 season in dramatic fashion, defeating visiting Marietta College, 1-0, under the lights at UPMC Field.
With 89 seconds left in regulation,
Tanisha Grewal directed home a long through ball by
Jordan Kirkwood to account for the lone goal of the match.
Kirkwood gathered the ball on the sideline in front of the SVC bench and sent a long ball toward the top of the box. The ball avoided one defender at the top of the 18 and met Grewal in stride in front of the goal mouth. The co-captain quickly tapped it into the cage for her 38th career marker, and sixth career game-winner.
The Bearcats (1-0) were outshot by an 18-8 margin by the Pioneers (0-1), including an 8-2 margin in shots on goal, but SVC keeper
Rilyn Warner turned aside all eight shots in her collegiate debut to earn the shutout victory.
Despite being outshot, the Bearcats doubled up the Pioneers in corner kicks, 6-3.
Grewal,
Madisen Geesaman and
Emma Koller shared the SVC team lead with two shots apiece.
Saint Vincent will now have a quick turnaround, as it travels to Ohio for a 1 p.m. non-conference tilt at Hiram College on Sunday, Sept. 1.
