Women's volleyball breezes past Bethany in PAC sweep

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 1)- The Saint Vincent women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep against Bethany in a home Presidents Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday night in the Carey Center.

The Bearcats (3-8, 2-3 PAC) won in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-21.

Meegan Williams had a big night for the Bearcats, totaling 15 kills and 12 digs, while also recording an impressive .353 hitting percentage. Bailey Green recorded a double-double as well with 31 assists and 11 digs.

Brenna McCracken added 21 digs, while Dakota Hershberger totaled 11 kills and Lauren Fox added five kills and a match-high five blocks for the Bearcats.

It was a back-and-forth opening set as neither team was able to gain a large advantage. Saint Vincent led by a slight 17-16 margin in the later portion of the set. The Bearcats went on to score four of the next five to take a 21-17 lead. Bethany cut the lead to 22-19, but SVC went on to score three of the final four on two Bethany errors and a kill from Hershberger to win the set (25-20), taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, it was much of the same story. This time, Bethany held a slight 11-10 lead in the middle portion of the set. Saint Vincent went on and impressive 8-0 run to take an 18-11 lead. Over the run, Vivian Wirth and Aubrey Siwula, along with Williams and Hershberger all recorded kills. Bethany climbed back into the set, cutting the lead to just two at 18-16, however SVC concluded the set on a 7-3 run to win the set (25-19), taking a commanding 2-0 lead.

Once again, Bethany held a slight 16-14 lead in the middle portion of the third set. However, another Saint Vincent run won the match for them. The Bearcats went on a 5-1 run to take a 19-17 lead in the set. Bethany cut the lead to one at 21-20, but Saint Vincent scored four of the final five, two of which came on kills from Hershberger and Williams to win the set (25-21) and the match 3-0.

As a team, the Bearcats recorded a .159 attack percentage over the course of the match. SVC also recorded 40 kills in comparison to Bethany's 25.

Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, October 4 with a home matchup against Thiel. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in the Robert S. Carey Center on Saturday evening.
