Niemiec picks up milestone victory; Bearcats take down Pitt-Greensburg in season opener

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 3)- The Saint Vincent men's tennis team picked up a 7-0 win against Pitt-Greensburg in the Bearcats season opener on Friday evening at the SVC Courts.

The win for the Bearcats (1-0) was the 150th career victory in Head Coach Brian Niemiec's head coaching career at Saint Vincent.

The Bearcats won all seven points and all nine matches in doubles and singles combined to take down the Bobcats.

To start off doubles, Braden Yokopenic and Timothy Jakubek earned a 6-1 victory at number two doubles. The win was Jakubek's first career collegiate victory. Saint Vincent clinched the doubles point in third doubles as J.T. Gockel and William Hinkson earned a 6-2 victory to give SVC a 1-0 lead in the match.

Matthew Sadusky and Brady Johnson added a 6-3 victory in the third doubles spot.

In singles play, Yokopenic picked up his second victory of the day with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the second spot to increase the SVC lead to 2-0. Jakubek followed with his first career singles victory and second win of the day, this one being a 6-2, 6-0 win in number six singles to push SVC ahead 3-0.

Johnson clinched the match for Saint Vincent in third singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory for his second win of the day.

SVC continued to add on as Gockel secured a 6-3, 6-1 win in number four singles, Hinkson earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory in number five single, and Sadusky concluded the match with a 7-5, 6-4 win in the top spot to clinch the clean sweep for the Bearcats.

Saint Vincent will take on Waynesburg on Monday, October 20 at a site and time to be determined.
