LATROBE, Pa. (Nov. 10)- The Saint Vincent men's basketball team defeated Thiel by a score of 85-59 in a home non-conference matchup on Monday night in Latrobe.
Saint Vincent (2-0) controlled from start to finish trailing just once (4-2) throughout the entirety of the game. The Bearcats outscored Thiel (0-1) 48-29 in the first half and 37-30 in the second half to earn the non-conference victory.
Dev Ostrowski led SVC with a double-double, scoring 23 points, while grabbing 12 rebounds.
Jevontae Jones added 14 points and six rebounds, while
Mike Iuzzolino finished in double figures with 10 points of his own.
Maxwell Gordon and
Jaden Gales both added nine points each, while Gordon dished out three assists and Gales grabbed three rebounds on 5-6 shooting.
It was a back-and-forth start early on to the first media timeout as the Bearcats gained an early 12-7 lead. Ostrowski led the Bearcats with four points in the first five minutes plus of the game.
The Bearcats took full control over the next five minutes of play. SVC came out of the media timeout on a 12-2 run to open their lead to 15 at 24-9 with just over ten minutes to play in the half.
Thiel cut into the Saint Vincent lead over the next two plus minutes as they went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to six (24-18) with seven minutes to play. Over the remaining seven minutes SVC quickly went on a 24-11 spurt to close the half out with a 19-point lead (48-29).
Jones led Saint Vincent with 13 points in the half, including a massive dunk to help increase the Bearcats lead. SVC shot an impressive 20-31 (65%) in the half, while limiting Thiel to shoot just 36% in the half. SVC outrebounded the Tomcats 20-15 in the half as well.
It was all Bearcats to open the second half as well. Saint Vincent opened the half on a 14-7 run to increase their lead to 62-36 with 14:47 remaining in the second half.
SVC controlled the rest of the way as well as their lead hovered between 25-30 to close out the non-conference victory (85-59).
The Bearcats shot an impressive 33-59 (56%) from the field in the win, including 6-12 from the three-point line. SVC outrebounded the Tomcats 40-36 in the victory as well.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Friday, November 14 as they take on Penn State-Du Bois in a home non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Robert S. Carey Center on Friday night.
