Strong defensive effort leads Saint Vincent past Pitt-Greensburg

LATROBE, Pa. (Nov. 11)- The Saint Vincent women's basketball team earned a 67-47 home non-conference victory against Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday night.
 
The Bearcats (2-1) defense stole the show from start to finish to give them the non-conference victory.
 
Camdon Bashor led Saint Vincent with 11 points, while grabbing a rebound as well. Makenna Maier scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Samantha Straub scored a career-high 10 points, while grabbing six rebounds and picking up three steals.
 
Avina Norman scored 10 points on 5-6 shooting for the Beracats as well. Emerson Peffer added seven points and two boards on the night.
 
It was all Saint Vincent in the opening quarter. The Bearcats quickly opened up scoring ten of the first 13 points to take a 10-3 lead. The rest of the quarter went back-and-forth as SVC held a seven point lead (20-13) at the end of the opening quarter.
 
Saint Vincent held UPG to shoot just 36% (5-14) in the quarter, while SVC shot 6-14 (43%).
 
In the second quarter, the defensive game continued over the first five minutes, but the Bearcats slightly increased their lead to 10 (31-21). The next three minutes belonged to SVC as well as the Bearcats went on a 13-0 run to close the half and hold a 23-point (44-21) at the half.
 
The Bearcats recorded an impressive 14 steals in the first half, with Samantha Straub picking up three of them. Maier finished the first half in double figures with 10 points, while grabbing five rebounds for Saint Vincent.
 
Bashor added nine first half points and Peffer scored seven points for Saint Vincent.
 
Out of the half it was a slow start offensively for both teams. Only eight total points were scored between the two teams over the first six minutes of the third quarter and SVC held a 48-25 lead.
 
Pitt-Greensburg slightly outscored the Bearcats 11-10 in the third quarter, but Saint Vincent still held a large 22-point lead (54-32).
 
In the fourth quarter, Saint Vincent emptied their bench and kept the game in their favor to earn the win (67-47).
 
Saint Vincent forced 20 turnovers in the win, while shooting 36% in the game as well.
 
The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, November 15 with a trip to DeSales University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Center Valley, Pa.
