Bearcats fall in PAC opener at Grove City in five sets

GROVE CITY, Pa. (Feb. 13)- The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team fell to Grove City 3-2 in the Bearcats Presidents Athletic Conference opener.

Saint Vincent (4-4, 0-1 PAC) won the opening set 25-10, before falling to the Wolverines (5-8, 1-0 PAC) 25-23 in the next two sets. SVC won set four 25-16 to force a fifth set, before they fell 15-10 in the fifth set.

Shawn McSwiggen led the Bearcats with 21 kills and nine digs. Zebadiah Wyant added 17 kills and nine assists as well. Rocco Marino totaled four blocks, while Jackson Genicola recorded 43 assists and nine digs in the loss.

 It was all Saint Vincent in the opening set as the Bearcats quickly opened to an 8-1 lead and never looked back. SVC further increased their lead to 16-5, before closing the set out on a 9-5 spurt to win the opening set (25-10), taking a 1-0 lead in the match. Genicola clinched the set with a kill for Saint Vincent.

In the second set, it was back-and-forth early on as the best was tied 6-6. The teams continued to trade points as SVC trailed by a slight 20-19 margin. The Wolverines went on to outscore SVC 5-4 over the remaining points to hand Saint Vincent the set loss (25-23), tying the match at 1-1.

Grove City controlled and led for the majority of the third set as well. The Wolverines opened up to a 4-1 lead and never looked back in the set. Saint Vincent would eventuallyy come back to take a 23-21 lead in the set, before four straight Groves City points won the set (25-23), taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was very similar to the first set as Saint Vincent was in full control. SVC held a slight. 7-6 lead, before increasing that lead to 15-9. It was all Bearcats from that point as they closed the set out on a 10-7 run to win the set (25-16), tying the match at 2-2.

It was all Grove City in the final set. After Grove City tied the set at 2-2 and then took a 3-2 lead, they never lost the lead in the set. The Wolverines went on to win the set (15-10) and the match 3-2.

Saint Vincent hit .225 as a team, while Grove City hit just .093 in the match. The Bearcats led the match in kills, assists, and digs as well.

Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, February 15 with a non-conference matchup against Penn State-Altoona. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Robert S. Carey Center.
