Men's lacrosse falls to Wooster, 12-9

LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 22)- The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team fell to The College of Wooster by a final score of 12-9 at UPMC Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Bearcats (0-2) who got off to a quick 2-0 lead trailed 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and 8-3 at the half. Saint Vincent went on to outscore the Fighting Scots (1-0) 6-4 in the second half, but it wasn't enough as SVC fell in the non-conference matchup.

Carter Haid led the Bearcats with four points, scoring three goals, while dishing out one assist as well. Liam McCall totaled four points as well, scoring two goals, while also dishing out two assists. Eli Hartle added two points, scoring one goal and recording an assist as well. Reed Hunt, Mason Krabbe, and Justin Wodarek all scored one goal each in the loss as well for SVC. Krabbe also lead Saint Vincent with four ground balls.

Brady Beard went 14-20 in the faceoff circle with four ground balls. Cam Herring picked up an assist and three ground balls, while Isaiah Francis, Layne Heininger, and Jacob Crumling all totaled one caused turnover each. Garrett Ritts took the loss in net, making nine saves for Saint Vincent.

Saint Vincent controlled the first six minutes of play. Hartle scored the first goal of the game on an assist from Herring to put Saint Vincent up 1-0. Four minutes later Haid scored with a man up to increase the lead to 2-0.

It was all Wooster for the next 15 minutes of game time. The Fighting Scots outscored SVC 9-1 over that time period as the Bearcats found themselves trailing 9-3 halfway through the third quarter.

SVC wouldn't go down without a fight. Saint Vincent scored four of the next five goals to get themselves back in the game. Hunt and McCall scored back-to-back with a man up to cut the lead to 9-5. After a Wooster goal, Haid scored back-to-back goals, both coming with a man up to cut the lead to 10-7.

Over the remaining five minutes of play, both teams scored two goals as the Bearcats fell in the non-conference matchup. Saint Vincent's final two goals came from Krabbe and McCall. 

Wooster outshot the Bearcats 37-34 over the course of the match. Saint vincent had 28 turnovers, compared to 16 from the Fighting Scots. Ground balls were 22-8 in favor of Saint Vincent. The Bearcats were 7-10 in extra man opportunities.

Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, March 1 with their first road matchup of the year at Bridgewater. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
