Walters game winner in double OT lifts Bearcats past Lions

LATROBE, Pa. (March 1)- The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team earned a 10-9 win in double overtime against Mt. St. Joseph's on Saturday afternoon at UPMC Field.

Carolina Walters had an impressive day for Saint Vincent totaling six points (5 goals, 1 assist), including the game-winning goal in double overtime. Walters game-winner is her second game-winning goal this week. She also led the Bearcats with five draw controls, while also picking up four ground balls.

Melanie Seefeldt also totaled six points for Saint Vincent, scoring two goals, while dishing out four assists as well. Valeria Hurtado totaled two points (1 goal, 1 assist), while Gabby Salandro and Louisa Zamborsky both scored one goal each. Hurtado also scooped up a team-high five ground balls and recorded five draw controls as well. Brianna Mack added four ground balls and one draw control for Saint Vincent in the win.

Cassidy Rega got the win in net, making six saves for SVC.

Less than a minute into the game, Salandro got the Bearcats on the board, scoring on assist from Seefeldt to put SVC up 1-0. The Lions tied it less than a minute later, but SVC answered with two consecutive goals of their own. First, Zamborsky scored on another assist from Seefeldt and Walters followed with her first goal of the game to increase the Bearcats lead to 3-1.

MSJ answered scoring the next three goals in a row as SVC found themselves trailing 4-3 with 11:39 to go in the second quarter. 27 seconds later, Walters scored her second of the game to tie it at 4-4. 

After an MSJ goal, Seefeldt scored back-to-back goals to put Saint Vincent up 6-5 going into the half.

The Lions scored the first three goals of the second half, as SVC once again found themselves trailing, this time by an 8-6 margin. However, the Bearcats would go on to score four of the final five goals, three of which came from Walters. MSJ held a 9-7 lead early in the fourth quarter, but a goal from Walters and then Hurtado with 1:41 remaining in the fourth quarter tied the game at 9-9, sending it to overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, Walters scored the game winner just 37 seconds into the second overtime to give Saint Vincent their second consecutive victory.

Saint Vincent out shot MSJ by a 36-22 margin. The Bearcats were 22-27 on clears, while they also led draw controls 12-10. 

The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, March 8 with a trip to Frederick, Md. to take on Hood. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 noon next Saturday.
