DANVILLE, Va. (March 1)- The Saint Vincent wrestling team placed 11th overall at the NCAA Regional Championships in Danville on Friday and Saturday.
Three Saint Vincent wrestlers earned top-eight finished at the regional championship.
Leading the way for the Bearcats was
Ryan Weinzen who recorded a fifth place finish in the 184 lbs. weight class. To open the tournament on Friday, Weinzen earned a 17-1 tech. fall victory to advance on in the winners bracket. After falling in his next match, he earned 16-4 major decision victory to still have a shot at third place. Weinzen eventually fell, before ending the tournament with an 8-0 major decision victory in the fifth place match.
Chase Brandebura earned a sixth place finish for the Bearcats in the 165 lbs. weight class. In his first match of the tournament, Brandebura picked up a pin at 1:14 to advance in the winners bracket. After falling in his next match, the sophomore picked up a tech. fall and another pin, before eventually falling to go into the fifth place match. In that fifth place match, Brandebura fell by a slight 8-5 decision to finish sixth in the region.
Anthony Orlandini concluded his impressive freshman season with an eighth place spot in the region at the 149 lbs. weight class. After earning a 21-11 major decision victory in his first match of the tournament, Orlandini eventually fell, before picking up another major decision (13-4) to advance to the seventh place match. Orlandini eventually fell in the match, but still placed eighth in the region.
