LATROBE, Pa. (March 12)- The Saint Vincent baseball team dropped a doubleheader against Mount Aloysius in the Bearcats home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Bearcat Ballfield.
Saint Vincent (3-6) fell in a tight 3-2 contest in the opener of the doubleheader, before the Mounties (5-3) used a seventh inning rally to win 5-2 in the second game.
Game 1- Mount Aloysius 3, Saint Vincent 2
In the opener of the doubleheader, Saint Vincent jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings of play. However, the Mounties scored two in the fourth to tie it and one in the fifth to take the lead, before shutting down the Bearcats in the final four innings.
Six different Bearcats totaled one hit in the loss.
Alex Hess and
Nathan Whiteman both recorded hits and scored a run.
Derek Hald added a hit and RBI, while
Dalton Nicklow,
Dylan Schmude, and
L.J. Evans all totaled one hit each.
Andrew Root took the loss on the mound for Saint Vincent in the bullpen led game. Root pitched two innings in relief, allowing just one run on one hit, while striking out one and walking one as well.
Jeremy Kreuzwieser started on the mound for SVC, pitching two scoreless innings, while picking up a strikeout.
Garrett Knapp threw 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits.
After a scoreless opening two innings, Saint Vincent capitalized on a couple of Mount Aloysius errors in the third. Hess dropped a bunt down, reaching on a throwing error by the Mounties pitcher, allowing Whiteman to come in for the first run of the game. Hald followed with an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Hess to put the Bearcats up 2-0.
Mount Aloysius answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. After a scoreless bottom of the fourth, the Mounties scored what turned out to be the winning run in the fifth on an RBI-sac fly to put them up 3-2. Mounties starter Tyler Quade went the distance in the game and eventually shut the door on the Bearcats to hand SVC the 3-2 loss.
Saint Vincent scored their two runs on six hits, committing two errors. Mount Aloysius scored their three runs on just four hits, committing three errors of their own.
Game 2- Mount Aloysius 5, Saint Vincent 2
With the game tied 2-2 going into the final inning, Mount Aloysius struck for three runs in the top of the seventh, before shutting SVC down to earn the 5-2 win and sweep the Bearcats.
Saint Vincent totaled just five hits in the game two loss. Hess, Nicklow, Evans, Whiteman, and
Jacob Auld tallied the hits for the Bearcats.
Alex Polito took the loss in relief for SVC, pitching one inning, giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits.
Jacob Hess,
Christopher Rayman, and Evan Wiewora all threw scoreless relief outings for Saint Vincent in the loss.
SVC once again struck first in the second game of the day. Hess scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first to put Saint Vincent up 1-0. However, the Mounties answered with two runs in the top of the second as Saint Vincent found themselves trailing 2-1.
In the fourth, the Bearcats tied the game up. Auld doubled down the left field line, scoring
Isiah Petty, who pinch ran for Nicklow to tie the game at 2-2. After a scoreless fifth and sixth innings from both teams, Mount Aloysius scored three runs in the top of the seventh and shut the door on the Bearcats in the bottom of the inning to sweep the Bearcats.
Saint Vincent scored their two runs on five hits, committing two errors, while the Mounties scored their five runs on five hits as well, committing one error.
The Bearcats will look to get back on track as they make their annual trip to Newport News, Virginia to take on the Apprentice School. The first of two doubleheaders against the Builders will take place on Friday, March 14. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
