PITTSBURGH, Pa. (March 15)- The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team fell on the road at La Roche by a score of 12-9 on Saturday afternoon.
Saint Vincent (2-4) trailed 8-5 at the half, before playing to a 4-4 tie in the second half against the Red Hawks (4-0).
Carolina Walters led the Bearcats with four goals, while also picking up four draw controls, one ground ball and one caused turnover as well.
Gabby Salandro and
Louisa Zamborsky both totaled two points, scoring one goal and dishing out one assist each, while Salandro caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls. Zamborsky also caused a turnover and picked up three ground balls of her own.
Katie Smith,
Alexandria Votovich, and
Melanie Seefeldt all scored one goal in the loss for Saint Vincent as well.
Valeria Hurtado led the Bearcats with six ground balls and five caused turnovers, while she also added four draw controls.
Cassidy Rega took the loss in net, making 13 saves for SVC.
La Roche scored the first goal of the game, but Saint Vincent answered scoring three in a row. Salandro scored the first of the three, followed by Walters and Zamborsky to put the Bearcats up 3-1. However, the Red Hawks answered with the next three, allowing them to regain the lead at 4-3 in the second quarter.
The Red Hawks controlled for most of the second quarter as they outscored SVC 5-2 in the quarter. Walters both goals in the second quarter for SVC as the Bearcats went into the half trailing 8-5.
There was just one goal scored between the two teams in the third quarter and that goal came from the Bearcats. Seefeldt scored on the penalty kill for SVC to cut the lead to 8-6 going into the fourth quarter.
It was an evenly played fourth quarter as La Roche slightly outscored Saint Vincent 4-3 in the quarter to hand the Bearcats the non-conference loss. Walters, Votovich, and Smith all scored for SVC in the final quarter.
Shots were 28-22 over the course of the game in favor of La Roche. The Bearcats were 8-9 on clears, while they scooped up 27 ground balls as well.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Friday, March 21 with the Presidents Athletic Conference opener against Thiel. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. under the lights at UPMC Field.
