Women's lacrosse falls in PAC opener to Thiel

LATROBE, Pa. (March 22)- The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team fell to Bethany by a score of 15-5 in the Bearcats Presidents Athletic Conference opener on Friday night.

The Bearcats (2-5, 0-1 PAC) were limited to just two goals in the first half by Thiel (6-0, 1-0 PAC), before the Tomcats outscored SVC 8-3 in the second half as well, falling in their PAC opener.

Cara Dupilka and Carolina Walters both scored two goals each for Saint Vincent in the loss. Valeria Hurtado added a goal, while Gabby Salandro assisted on one goal as well for the Bearcats. Walters and Hurtado led SVC with four ground balls each, Walters also caused one turnover and picked up four draw controls as well.

Melanie Seefeldt and Katie Smith both picked up two ground balls each for SVC. Cassidy Rega took the loss in net, making 12 saves for Saint Vincent.

Thiel jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the opening quarter. After the Tomcats scored the first goal of the second quarter to increase their lead to 4-0, Saint Vincent scored the next two goals. Hurtado and Dupilka both scored to cut the lead to 4-2 midway through the second quarter.

Thiel went on to outscore SVC 11-1 over the 25 minutes of game time to take a 15-3 lead, enforcing the running clock. Walters netted the final two goals of the game for SVC, but the Tomcats handed the Bearcats the loss in their PAC opener.

Thiel outshot SVC, 35-25 in the match. Both teams scooped up 22 ground balls each, while Thiel led draw controls 15-9.

Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, March 26 with a PAC road matchup at Westminster. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in New Wilmington.
