WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 2)- The Saint Vincent baseball team began their southern spring break trip with a 7-4 loss to Dominican in Winter Haven on Sunday morning.
The Bearcats (0-1) got out to an early 1-0 lead after the first, but a three run second inning and four run sixth inning was all that Dominican (4-2) needed to hand Saint Vincent the loss in the season opener.
Ben Hudson led SVC with three hits at the top of the lineup, going 3-5 with one run scored as well. Senior catcher
Derek Hald also went 3-5 in the season opener for Saint Vincent.
Nolan Hurd added two hits, while
L.J. Evans,
Dalton Nicklow, and
Mario Disso all recorded hits for the Bearcats as well.
Tyler Dancu got the start on the mound for Saint Vincent, picking up the no-decision. Dancu pitched five innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits, while also striking out seven and walking two.
Cody May pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief for Saint Vincent as well.
It was a quick start for SVC in the first inning. Hudson led the game off with a single and after a flyout, Nicklow followed with a single as the Bearcats were in business with runners on first and third and only one out. Evans followed with an RBI double, scoring Hudson to put SVC up 1-0.
After Dominican went scoreless in the first, they scored one in the second and two in the third as Saint Vincent trailed 3-1. SVC cut into the lead in the third with Hald driving in Disso to cut the lead to 3-2. An inning late in the fourth, Saint Vincent tied the game with Disso ripping an RBI single to left, scoring Hurd to tie the game at 3-3.
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth, before Dominican recorded a four run sixth inning to break the game open at 7-3. SVC added a run in the sventh on an
Alex Hess RBI-groundout to cut the lead to 7-4, but that was the closest the Bearcats would get as the Dominican bullpen shut them down the rest of the game.
Saint Vincent scored their four runs on 11 hits, while also committing three errors as well. Dominican on the other hand scored their seven runs on nine hits, also committing three errors as well.
The Bearcats will return to action tomorrow, Monday March 3 with a matchup against Concordia College (Minn.). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Chain of Lakes Complex in Winter Haven, Fla.
