Bearcats sweep Bethany in PAC road matchup

BETHANY, W.V. (March 26)- The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team earned a 3-0 Presidents Athletic Conference sweep on the road against Bethany on Wednesday night.

The Bearcats (9-10, 4-5 PAC) won in straight sets by scores of 25-12, 25-20, and 25-23 over the Bison (2-19, 0-9 PAC) to secure their second win of the season against Bethany.

Zebadiah Wyant led Saint Vincent with 11 kills in the win for the Bearcats, while Shawn McSwiggen added eight kills and Tyler Nelson totaled seven kills of his own. Jackson Genicola recorded 25 assists, while Chrystiaan Sexton totaled three blocks for the Bearcats as well.

Saint Vincent hit an impressive .338 over the course of the three set sweep.

It was all Bearcats in the opening set of the night as Saint Vincent quickly jumped out to a 3-1 lead on kills from Nelson, Sexton, and McSwiggen. Over the next several points, the SVC lead grew to six points at 14-8 and then 17-11. Saint Vincent went on to score eight of the final nine points to win the set (25-12), winning the set on a Bethany setting error.

In the second set, it was much of the same story as the Bearcats quickly jumped out to a 6-1 lead. Bethany came back to tie the set at 14-14, but Saint Vincent answered. The Bearcats then went on an 8-4 run to take a 22-18 lead in the set. Saint Vincent scored three of the final five points in the set as well, winning the set (25-20), taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set went back-and-forth as the teams traded points to a 9-9 tie. Saint Vincent answered with an 8-1 run to take a 17-10 lead. Bethany stormed back to tie the set at 20-20 and then Bethany took a 22-21 lead. SVC answered with a 4-1 run to win the set (25-23), ending the match with a kill from McSwiggen to secure the 3-0 win for Saint Vincent.

SVC totaled 35 kills, nine service aces, 29 assists, and 22 digs over the course of the match.

Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, March 29 with a home matchup against Hiram. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in the Carey Center.
