Baseball splits doubleheader at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (March 29)- The Saint Vincent baseball team earned a doubleheader split in two tight Presidents Athletic Conference games at Westminster on Saturday afternoon.

The Bearcats (10-11, 4-2 PAC) used a ninth inning comeback to win game one 6-5, before the Titans (9-11, 4-2 PAC) stopped a second Bearcats comeback as Saint Vincent fell 4-3 in extra innings in the finale of the doubleheader.

Game 1- Saint Vincent 6, Westminster 5

The Bearcats trailed 5-4 with two outs in the ninth inning, before Nathan Whiteman ripped a two-RBI single to right field, which turned out to be the game winning RBI's for Saint Vincent in the opener.

Whiteman led Saint Vincent in the opener going 3-5 with four RBI's. Nolan Hurd added two hits and one run scored, while Isiah Petty added two hits, one RBI, and one run scored as well. Mario Disso, Kyle Belmont, Jacob Auld, and Alex Hess all recorded hits in the Bearcats win.

Andrew Root picked up the win on the mound in relief for Saint Vincent. Root pitched one inning, allowing one earned run on two hits. Alex Polito picked up the save for Saint Vincent pitching one scoreless inning, allowing one walk. Jeremy Kreuzwieser took the no decision, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits, striking out eight and walking three batters.

Eric Harris and Jacob Hess both tossed scoreless appearances in relief for Saint Vincent.

After a scoreless first inning, Saint Vincent scored three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Petty opened the scoring with an RBI-single, scoring Belmont to put the Bearcats in the lead at 1-0. Whiteman followed with his first of two, two-RBI doubles in the game, this one scoring Petty and Alex Hess to put Saint Vincent up 3-0. However, the Titans answered with three runs in the following inning to tie the game at 3-3.

That 3-3 score would hold going into the sixth inning. In the sixth, Nolan Hurd scored on a throwing error to put Saint Vincent back in the lead at 4-3. Westminster once again answered, tying the game at 4-4 going into the seventh inning.

Both teams went scoreless in the seventh, before Westminster took their first lead of the game in eighth after an RBI-single put them up 5-4. 

With the game on the line in the ninth, Whiteman ripped his second two-RBI double of the game, scoring both Alex Hess and Julian Santana to give Saint Vincent a 6-4 lead.

Polito allowed one base runner in the ninth, but shut down the Titans to secure the win for the Bearcats.

Saint Vincent's final line score was six runs on 11 hits, while the Titans scored five runs on nine hits, committing one error.

Game 2- Westminster 4, Saint Vincent 3 (10 Innings)

Saint Vincent once again tried to come from behind as they tied the game at 3-3 in the ninth inning. However, the Titans would go on to walk the game off with a double in the tenth inning to hand the Bearcats the loss in the finale of the doubleheader.

Jacob Auld led Saint Vincent at the late going 2-5 with one RBI for Saint Vincent. Lane Golkosky and Derek Hald both added a hit and RBI. Nolan Hurd, Alex Hess, Isiah Petty, and Ryan Tierney all recorded one hit each as well.

Alex Polito took the loss on the mound in game two, pitching 1.1 innings in relief, allowing one run on one hit, striking out two and walking two as well. Tyler Dancu got the start on the mound for SVC, taking the no-decision, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits, striking out six and walking five. Connor Soska and Garrett Knapp both tossed scoreless appearances for Saint Vincent in relief.

Westminster led 1-0 through five innings of play. In the sixth, Saint Vincent scored two runs to take the lead on a Hald RBI-sac fly and Auld RBI-double to put the Bearcats up 2-1. Westminster scored two in the seventh to regain the lead 3-2, but the Bearcats wouldn't go away for the second consecutive game.

Golkosky ripped an RBI-single through the left side, scoring Tierney to tie the game at 3-3. Polito shut the Titans down in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Saint Vincent went scoreless in the top of tenth and Westminster won it in the bottom of the inning. The Titans scored on an RBI-double with one out in the inning to split the doubleheader.

Saint Vincent's final line score was three runs on eight hits, committing one error, while Westminster scored four runs on six hits.

The Bearcats retrurn to action on Wednesday, April 2 with another road PAC doubleheader at Thiel. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. with game two to follow after the conclusion of the first game in Greenville, Pa.
