Women's lacrosse wins big on senior day

LATROBE, Pa. (March 29)- The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team earned a big 14-3 win on senior day against Geneva.

The big Presidents Athletic Conference win for the Bearcats (3-6, 1-2 PAC) was highlighted by Carolina Walters scoring her 100th career point with a goal just 56 seconds into the game. SVC shut out the Golden Tornadoes (0-8, 0-2 PAC) in the first half, outscoring them by a 10-0 margin, before winning the second half 4-3 as well.

Walters concluded her career day with three goals and one assist, while also picking up a game-high five draw controls for Saint Vincent in the win. Katie Smith led Saint Vincent with five points for the Bearcats, scoring two goals, while dishing out three assists as well. Smith also picked up six ground balls and caused two turnovers. 

Senior, Gabby Salandro added three goals on her senior day, while Melanie Seefeldt totaled three points as well, scoring one goal, while dishing out two assists. Cara Dupilka and Valeria Hurtado both added two goals each in the win for Saint Vincent. Bethany Smith added a goal and Kara Smith recorded one assist. Ava Baeslach scooped up four ground balls for Saint Vincent in the win.

Cassidy Rega picked up the win in net for the Bearcats, recording three saves. 

Saint Vincent opened senior day in a big way, scoring six first quarter goals. First, Walters scored her 100th career point to open the game on an assist from Seefeldt to put the Bearcats up 1-0. Seefeldt answered a few minutes later with a goal on an assist from Katie Smith to increase the Saint Vincent lead to 2-0. In the next six minutes, Hurtado and Katie Smith scored, while Salandro scored two of her three goals to put the Bearcats up 6-0 going into the second quarter.

The Bearcats added four more goals in the second quarter to increase their lead to 10-0. Hurtado, Walters, Dupilka, and Bethany Smith all scored in the second quarter for SVC.

It was much more back-and-forth as the mercy rule running clock was on in the second half. Saint Vincent went on to outscore the GT's by a 4-3 margin. Walters, Dupilka, Katie Smith, and Salandro were the four Saint Vincent goal scorers to close out their first PAC win of the season.

Saint Vincent outshot Geneva by a 29-11 margin. The Bearcats were also 19-22 on clears and scooped up 19 ground balls as well. Draw controls were also 12-9 in favor of the Bearcats as well. SVC was 1-2 on free position shots, while Geneva was 3-5.

Prior to the game, Saint Vincent honored their five seniors, Abigail Stewart, Brianna Mack, Alexandria Votovich, Gabby Salandro, and Addy Carbaugh.

Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday, April 1 with a road PAC matchup at Allegheny. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Meadville, Pa.
