Softball splits Sunday doubleheader at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Apr. 13)- The Saint Vincent softball team split a Presidents Athletic Conference doubleheader at Washington and Jefferson on Sunday afternoon.

The Bearcats (16-14, 4-8 PAC) won the opener 9-4, before falling 2-1 in a low scoring game two to the Presidents (11-14, 6-8 PAC).

Game 1- Saint Vincent 9, W&J 4

Saint Vincent used an offensive outburst scoring nine runs on 14 hits to take the opener in the PAC doubleheader.

Alyssa Henderson led Saint Vincent with three hits in the win. Dakota Hershberger went an impressive 2-4 with four RBI's and two runs scored. Three of those four RBI's came on a three-run homer in the sixth inning. Mackenzie Favero went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored as well. Taylor Williams added two hits, two RBI's, and a run scored, while Josey Michalski also totaled two hits, while also scoring two runs and driving one in as well.

Lily Koller recorded one hit and one RBI, while Eva Farone and Abby Bauer both recorded one hit. Bauer also scored one run as well.

Meghan Braun picked up the win in the circle, moving to 8-3 on the year. She pitched all seven innings, allowing two earned runs on 11 hits, while striking out three batters.

After a scoreless first two innings, W&J got the scoring started in the bottom of the third as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

Saint Vincent answered with a run in the fourth on an RBI-single from Williams that scored Michalski to cut the Presidents lead to 2-1. The Bearcats held W&J scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, before they scored three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. Hershberger recorded an RBI-double, followed by a Michalski RBI-single, and Lily Koller RBI sac fly that put the Bearcats in front at 4-2.

Washington and Jefferson answered, scoring two in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 4-4.

For the second consecutive inning, the Bearcats put three runs on the board in the top of the sixth to grab the lead right back. All three runs came on a three-run homer in the sixth inning to put the Bearcats up 7-4.

SVC added two more insurance runs, scoring two in the seventh on a Favero single to increase their lead to 9-4. The Bearcats shut the Presidents down in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener in the PAC doubleheader.

Game 2- W&J 2, Saint Vincent 1

It was a pitchers duel in the second game of the day. The Bearcats scored their lone run in the first inning, before the Presidents outscored them 2-0 the rest of the way.

The Bearcats recorded seven hits in the loss, with six different players totaling at least one hit. Mackenzie Favero led SVC going 2-3 in the loss. Eva Farone, Josey Michalski, and Alyssa Henderson all recorded a hit each, as did Abby Bauer and Taylor Williams. Haley Hamilton recorded Saint Vincent's lone RBI for the Bearcats.

Olivia Bushore took the loss in the circle, pitching six innings, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits, while recording one strikeout as well.

Saint Vincent started the game on a strong note. Hamilton hit an RBI-sac fly that scored Farone in the top of the first to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. However, that was the only run SVC would get the rest of the way.

W&J scored one run in the second and added another run in the third inning and that was all they needed as both teams went scoreless the rest of the way.

SVC returns to action on Tuesday, April 15 with a road matchup at Chatham. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday night.
