Michalski leads Saint Vincent in doubleheader sweep against Waynesburg

LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 24)- The Saint Vincent softball team picked up a big doubleheader sweep against Waynesburg to keep their playoff hopes alive.
 
The Bearcats (21-15, 9-9 PAC) were led by Josey Michalski who picked up game-winning hits in both games of the doubleheader. Michalski walked it off with a double in game one to give the Bearcats a 3-2 victory and followed that up with an RBI-double in the sixth inning of game two to give SVC a 4-2 victory over the Yellow Jackets (22-14, 8-9 PAC).
 
Game 1- Saint Vincent 3, Waynesburg 2

Saint Vincent trailed 2-0 after four innings, before outscoring the Yellow Jackets 3-0 from the fifth through seventh innings. Michalski won the game for Saint Vincent with a walk-off double to right center, scoring Shayna Perigo to win the opener of the doubleheader for SVC.
 
Along with her walk-off, Michalski went 2-4 with one RBI and one run scored to lead Saint Vincent. Perigo added two hits, going 2-3 with an RBI and run scored as well.
 
Taylor Williams totaled a hit and RBI, while Dakota Hershberger and Alyssa Henderson both added one hit each.
 
A.J. Arnal picked up the win in the circle, pitching a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, striking out one batter as well.
 
After a scoreless first three innings, Waynesburg scored two in the fourth to take a 2-0 advantage. Saint Vincent went scoreless in the bottom of the inning and the Yellow Jackets did not score in the top of the fifth as the score was still 2-0 through four and a half innings.
 
In the fifth, Perigo got the Bearcats on the board with an RBI-single through the right side, scoring Hershberger to cut the lead to 2-1. Arnal pitched a scoreless top of the sixth, before SVC tied it in the bottom of the inning.
 
Williams tied the game with an RBI-single, scoring Michalski as the score was 2-2.
 
Arnal once again cruised through a scoreless top of the seventh to set the Bearcats up for the win in the bottom of the inning. With two outs in the inning, Michalski ripped a deep fly ball to right center, allowing Perigo to score from second to give Saint Vincent the 3-2 walk-off win.
 
SVC scored their three runs on seven hits, committing one error, while Waynesburg scored their two runs on six hits, committing one error.
 
Game 2- Saint Vincent 4, Waynesburg 2

It was a tight game in the second game of the day as well, with Saint Vincent coming from behind to win the game once again. The Bearcats trailed 2-1 after four and a half innings, before tying the game in the bottom of the fifth. SVC added two more runs in the sixth and shut Waynesburg down in the seventh to win the game and complete the sweep.
 
Josey Michalski added two more hits, including the game-winning hit, while she drove two runs in as well. Abby Bauer and Dakota Hershberger both added two hits each, while Hershberger also drove a run in as well.
 
Eva Farone, Alyssa Henderson, and Anita Szymoniak all recorded one hit each for the Bearcats, while Henderson recorded one RBI.
 
Saint Vincent was once again led by a strong pitching performance, this one coming from Meghan Braun. Braun pitched a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits, while striking out three batters.
 
In the finale of the doubleheader, Saint Vincent got the scoring started with an RBI-single to left field, scoring Farone to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.
 
That 1-0 lead would hold going into the fifth inning, but the Yellow Jackets struck for two in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.
 
SVC quickly tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a Hershberger RBI-triple, scoring Bauer as the score was 2-2.
 
In the sixth, Michalski ripped what would the game winning RBI-single down the left field line, scoring Macie McHugh to give the Bearcats a 3-2 lead. Henderson added an RBI-single, scoring Mackenzie Favero to give the Bearcats an insurance run and 4-2 lead.
 
Waynesburg got two runners on in the seventh, but Braun closed the door shut to give the Bearcats the win and doubleheader sweep.
 
Saint Vincent scored their four runs on nine hits, committing two errors, while Waynesburg scored two runs on seven hits, also committing two errors.
 
The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, April 24 with a trip to Grove City for a PAC doubleheader. The regular season finale doubleheader for SVC is scheduled for 1 p.m. first pitch at Grove City.
