Bearcats split final non-conference doubleheader at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. (Apr. 27)- The Saint Vincent baseball team split their final non-conference doubleheader of the season at Juniata on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Bearcats (17-19) fell in the opener 9-6, before winning an offensive led 26-14 game in the finale of the doubleheader against the Eagles (8-27). The 32 runs scored for Saint Vincent in the doubleheader is the second most runs scored in a doubleheader in program history.
 
Game 1- Juniata 9, Saint Vincent 6
The Bearcats scored four first inning runs, but Juniata outscored them 9-2 the rest of the way to hand SVC the non-conference defeat.
 
Derek Hald and Kyle Belmont led the way for Saint Vincent with two hits each. Hald went 2-4 with two runs scored, while Belmont went 2-4 as well with one run scored and one RBI.
 
Chuck Fontana added a hit and RBI, while L.J. Evans went 1-4 with two RBIs for the Bearcats. Dylan Schmude, Ben Hudson, and Alex Hess all recorded one hit each for the Bearcats as well.
 
Eric Harris took the loss on the mound in relief, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on one hit, while striking out one and walking two. Evan Wiewiora and Christopher Rayman both tossed scoreless innings in relief for SVC.
 
SVC jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after the top of the first. Fontana and Belmont both had RBI's, while Evans recorded both of his RBI's in the first inning as well to give the Bearcats the early four run lead.
 
Juniata answered with a three-run bottom of the second to cut the Bearcats lead to 4-3 and added another run in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4.
 
After a scoreless fifth inning for both teams, Juniata broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning to take a 9-4 advantage.
 
Saint Vincent attempted a comeback, scoring two runs on a Belmont single that scored Hald and Belmont later came around to score as the Bearcats trailed 9-6.
 
The Juniata bullpen would hold Saint Vincent in check over the next two innings to hand the Bearcats the loss in the opener of the doubleheader.
 
The Bearcats scored six runs on nine hits, committing one error, while Juniata scored nine runs on 15 hits, committing two errors.
 
Game 2- Saint Vincent 26, Juniata 14
 
If you enjoy a lot of offense, then game two was the game to watch. The teams combined to score 40 runs on 48 total hits. Saint Vincent recorded 20 of those hits, while Juniata recorded 20 hits of their own.
 
SVC scored six in the first, one in the third, three in the fourth, four in the fifth, eight in the sixth, and four more runs in the eighth to earn the double-digit victory. Juniata scored four in the first, one in the fourth, five in the fifth, and four more in the seventh.
 
Eight Bearcats totaled at least two hits, while five recorded three or more, and two totaled four hits. Kyle Belmont went 4-7 with three RBI's and four runs scored. Jacob Auld also totaled four hits, going 4-6 with four runs scored and an RBI as well.
 
Dylan Schmude went 3-6 with three RBI's and two runs scored in the leadoff spot, while Derek Hald also went 3-6 with four RBI's and three runs scored hitting cleanup. Ben Hudson added three hits in four at bats, while scoring four runs and walking once as well.
 
Isiah Petty added two hits and three RBI's, while Dalton Nicklow and Alex Hess recorded two hits and two RBI's each. T.J. Bucy was the third Bearcat to record two hits, while Traynor Janosko added a hit, two runs scored, one RBI, and three walks.
 
Lane Golkosky totaled one hit, and one run scored as did Nolan Hurd for Saint Vincent.
 
Saint Vincent used six pitchers to pick up the victory in game two. Garrett Knapp picked up the win, pitching four innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits, while striking out one and walking one as well. Jack Reichart and Andrew Root both tossed scoreless outings in relief for the Bearcats in the win.
 
The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, May 3 with their regular season finale doubleheader at Grove City. The Bearcats will look to lock up a spot in next week's PAC playoffs with first pitch scheduled for game one at 1 p.m.
