LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 30)- The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team fell to second seeded Chatham 10-7 in the PAC Semifinals in front of a packed crowd at UPMC Field on Wednesday night.
Due to the severe storms in Western Pennsylvania on Tuesday evening and a power outage at Chatham, the game was moved to Latrobe under the lights at UPMC Field.
Saint Vincent (9-8) led 4-1 after the first quarter, but a 5-1 second quarter allowed the Cougars to take the lead at 6-5 at the half. Chatham limited SVC to just two goals in the second half, outscoring them 4-2, including 3-0 in the fourth quarter to knock the Bearcats out of the playoffs.
Garrett Ritts took the loss in net, but was strong for SVC all night. He made a game-high 14 saves to help keep Saint Vincent in the game throughout.
Jonathan Nagy led SVC with three points, scoring two goals, while dishing out one assist as well.
Reed Hunt added a goal and one assist, while six different Bearcats totaled one point.
Carter Haid,
Cam Herring,
Justin Wodarek, and
Liam McCall all scored once, while
Jacob Crumling and
Neal Ritchie recorded one assist each.
Brady Beard went 10-18 in faceoffs and scooped up five ground balls for SVC.
Colton Baker and
Mason Krabbe, along with McCall all recorded four ground ball pickups for Saint Vincent as well. Baker also caused two turnovers as well.
It was all Bearcats in the opening quarter, playing as the away team at their home field. SVC quickly scored the first goal of the game 40 seconds in as McCall scored on an assist from Nagy. Chatham answered a little over a minute later to tie the game at 1-1, but it was all Bearcats from that point on.
A mix of strong defense and good offense allowed SVC to score the next three goals. First, Haid scored on an assist from Hunt, Hunt followed with a goal on an assist from Ritchie, and Wodarek added a goal with just over a minute remaining in the quarter to put the Bearcats up 4-1 going into the second quarter.
Chatham answered with a big second quarter, outscoring SVC 5-1 in the quarter, despite Saint Vincent out shooting them 13-12 in the quarter. Four of Chatham's five goals in the second quarter came with under five minutes left in the quarter, including two being scored with under a minute remaining to give the Cougars a 6-5 lead at the half.
Out of the half, Chatham opened with a goal to push their lead to two at 7-5. However, the Bearcats battled back as the next 11 minutes of play shifted the momentum in their favor. SVC scored back-to-back goals as Nagy found the back of the net on an assist from Crumling and Herring followed to tie the game at 7-7 going into the final quarter with a trip to the PAC Championship game on the line.
Chatham controlled the entirety of the fourth quarter, outscoring SVC 3-0 in the quarter to advance to the championship game on Saturday night at Grove City.
The Bearcats were out shot by a slight 47-40 margin in the loss. Chatham turned it over 15 times, while the Bearcats totaled 21 turnovers. SVC was 16-22 on clears, while Chatham was 21-25. Ground balls were 30-29 in favor of SVC, while the Bearcats also led 11-9 in faceoffs. SVC was 1-2 on extra man opportunities, while Chatham was 2-5.
Saint Vincent concludes their season with a 9-8 overall record, including going 6-2 in PAC games.Â
