LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 5)- The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team earned a five set win at home against Chatham in their regular season finale to lock up the number five seed in next week's Presidents Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
The Bearcats (10-12, 5-7 PAC) dropped the opening set by a score of 25-17, before winning the next two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-22 to take a 2-1 lead. Chatham (7-13, 4-8 PAC) won set four by a score of 25-16, before Saint Vincent came back in the fifth set, 17-15, to earn the match win.
Jackson Genicola led the way for Saint Vincent with another double-double. The freshman recorded a team-high 46 assists, while also totaling 11 digs as well.
Shawn McSwiggen totaled 19 kills and nine digs, while
Zebadiah Wyant recorded 14 kills.
Tyler Nelson added ten kills, three blocks, and two assists in the win as well.
It was all Chatham in the opening set. The Cougars quickly opened to a 20-10 lead in the set, before going on to win the set (25-17), as the Bearcats trailed 1-0.
In the second set, it was back-and-forth for most of the way, with the Bearcats slightly pulling away at 18-16. Saint Vincent increased their lead to three at 22-19, before scoring the final three points to win the set (25-19) on two attack errors and a Nelson kill to tie the match at 1-1.
Saint Vincent took full control and the lead in set three. The Bearcats jumped out to a 5-1 lead, before increasing their lead to six at 16-10 in the middle portions of the set. Chatham cut the lead to one at 22-21, before the Bearcats scored three of the final four points in the set on a kill from
Rocco Marino and two errors by the Cougars to put Saint Vincent up 2-1 in the match.
The fourth set was tied at 9-9 before the Cougars took full control to force a fifth set. Chatham closed the set on a 16-7 run to win the set (25-16), tying the match at 2-2.
In the fifth set, Saint Vincent trailed 7-2, before going on a big 7-2 run to storm back and tie the set at 9-9. The teams continued to trade points back-and-forth as the set remained tied at 15-15. SVC won the set (17-15), scoring the next two points on a kill from McSwiggen and Chatham attack error to earn the season sweep against the Cougars.
Saint Vincent led blocks by a 7-4 clip. The Bearcats also hit .260, while the Cougars recorded a .253 hitting percentage.
Saint Vincent will be the number five seed in next week's PAC Playoffs, traveling to take on fourth seeded Geneva on Tuesday, April 8. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Beaver Falls.
