WASHINGTON, Pa. (May 7)- The Saint Vincent baseball team opened their 2025 Presidents Athletic Conference Tournament run with a 10-3 loss to Grove City on Wednesday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park in Washington.
The Bearcats (18-21) were stymied by five runs from Grove City (28-10) in the first two innings and were never able to recover. The Wolverines added one run in each of the fourth and sixth innings and three more in the eighth, while SVC scored one in the second and two in the ninth to fall in their opener of the double-elimination tournament.
Saint Vincent recorded just seven hits in the loss.
L.J. Evans recorded four of those seven Bearcat hits, going 4-4 with one run scored.
Isiah Petty,
Kyle Belmont, and
Dylan Schmude all added one hit each for the Bearcats in the loss.
Ben Hudson and
Jacob Auld both recorded RBI's for Saint Vincent as well.
Sean McAleer took the loss on the mound for SVC, pitching just 1.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits, while striking out two and walking one.
Nolan Hurd and
Jack Reichart both tossed scoreless innings in relief for Saint Vincent.
After a scoreless top half of the first for the Bearcats, Grove City struck for three runs in the bottom of the inning to quickly jump out to a 3-0 lead. SVC got on the board in the second on an RBI-groundout from Hudson that scored Belmont, cutting the Wolverines lead to 3-1.Â
However, Grove City added two more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-1 lead. From that point on, it was all Wolverines. Grove City scored one in the fourth, one in the sixth, and three more in the eighth to open their lead to 10-1. Saint Vincent scored two in the ninth, but it was too little too late.
Chuck Fontana scored on a wild pitch and Auld recorded an RBI-groundout that scored Evans in the ninth for Saint Vincent.
SVC scored their three runs on seven hits, recording two errors, while Grove City scored their 10 runs on 14 hits to earn the opening round victory.
Saint Vincent will now look to keep their season alive as they take on sixth seeded Thiel in the first elimination game of the 2025 tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, May 7 at Ross Memorial Park in Washington.
