WASHINGTON, Pa. (May 9)- The Saint Vincent baseball team concluded their 2025 campaign with a 3-2 loss to Westminster in the Presidents Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Bearcats (19-22) took on the Titans (18-21) in Saint Vincent's second consecutive elimination game. The Bearcats fell in the pitcher's duel between
Tyler Dancu and John Albers of Westminster.
The Titans led 2-1 after a high scoring first inning and that score would hold through the next seven innings. Westminster added an insurance run in the ninth, which proved to be costly. SVC loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but left the tying run at third base and the winning run at second, ending their season.
In his final career start with Saint Vincent, Dancu was magnificent on the mound. The graduate pitcher ended his Bearcat career by throwing 8.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits, while he struck out five and walked just one.
Andrew Root came in relief to toss a third of an inning, allowing one hit and one walk.
Dylan Schmude led a quiet Saint Vincent offense with two hits in his three at bats, while drawing two walks and scoring a run as well.
Derek Hald added a hit and RBI, while
Jacob Auld,
Ben Hudson, and
Isiah Petty all recorded hits in the loss as well.
Alex Hess recorded an RBI for Saint Vincent as well.
With two outs in the top of the first and runners on second and third for Westminster, they capitalized on a Saint Vincent error, scoring two runs on the error to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
The Bearcats answered in the bottom of the inning as Hald ripped an RBI-single down the right field line, scoring Schmude to cut the lead to 2-1.Â
From that point on both Dancu and Albers would control the next seven innings. Saint Vincent threatened to score in a couple of those innings, but the Westminster defense played strong defense behind Albers to keep the Bearcats off the scoreboard.
With two outs in the ninth, Westminster added to their lead with an insurance run to go up 3-1 going into the final inning. The Bearcats had one last fight in them with hopes to keep their season alive. Hess recorded an RBI-groundout, scoring
Ryan Tierney to cut the Titans lead to 3-2. SVC would later load the bases in the inning in hopes to tie or win the game.
A two-out strikeout with the bases loaded allowed the Titans to hand the Bearcats the loss, knocking them out of the tournament and ending their season.
Saint Vincent totaled six hits and two errors in the loss, while Westminster also recorded six hits, while totaling three errors.
SVC concludes their season with a 19-22 overall record and 11-9 record in PAC play.
