Second half comeback leads men's basketball past W&J on the road

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Jan. 21) – The Saint Vincent men's basketball team used balanced scoring and a strong second half to earn a 79-68 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory at Washington & Jefferson College Wednesday evening at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.

The Bearcats improve to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in PAC play, while the Presidents fall to 12-4 and 5-2 in conference action.

Saint Vincent got off to a competitive start, trailing 34-31 at the break before turning up the intensity after intermission.

The Bearcats shot 49.2 percent from the field on the night (31-of-63), including 33.3 percent from three (3-of-9), and finished 14-of-18 at the free-throw line to help pull away in the second half. Saint Vincent also dominated in key areas, outscoring Washington & Jefferson 20-6 in fast-break points and generating 27 points off turnovers.

Leading the Bearcats was Jaden Gales, who scored a team-high 16 points on 5-of-15 shooting while also contributing strong defensive effort.

Dev Ostrowski added 15 points, going 7-of-13 from the floor, and Jevontae Jones finished with 13 while adding six assists that helped fuel Saint Vincent's offense. Jaden Payne scored 12, and Terek Crosby scored 14 to round out the Bearcats' double-digit scorers. Mike Iuzzolino chipped in five points in the well-balanced attack.

Saint Vincent outpaced the Presidents on the glass, finishing with 39 rebounds, and its defense held Washington & Jefferson to 39.1 percent shooting (25-of-64) and 23.5 percent from beyond the arc (4-of-17). The Bearcats' effort to limit second-chance points and force contested looks was a key factor in the late-game separation.

The Bearcats return to action on Saturday, January 24 with a home matchup against Grove City College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Latrobe.
