GREENVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 3) – The Saint Vincent women's volleyball team saw its two-match winning streak come to an end, falling 3-0 to Thiel College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Gymnasium.
The Bearcats (4-8, 2-1 PAC) fell by set scores of 25-27, 18-25 and 19-25 to the Tomcats (5-5, 2-1 PAC).
Meegan Williams led the Saint Vincent attack with a match-high 15 kills while hitting .294, committing just five errors on 34 attempts. Williams also totaled 15 digs to record a double-double, while adding two total blocks and one service ace.
Aubrey Siwula followed with eight kills and seven digs, while Elliot Hardy added four kills and two blocks.
Preslee Horchak paced the Bearcats with 16 assists, while Madie Eagler added nine and Brenna McCracken totaled three.
Defensively, Williams led Saint Vincent with 15 digs, while McCracken added 12 and Maria Goldstein finished with 10. Williams, Hardy and Ashlynn Schutz each recorded two total blocks.
As a team, Saint Vincent totaled 32 kills, 31 assists, four service aces, four total blocks and 57 digs. The Bearcats were held to a .061 hitting percentage, while Thiel finished with 41 kills and a .184 hitting percentage.
The opening set was tightly contested, with the two teams battling back and forth throughout. After falling behind 20-14, Saint Vincent battled back to pull within one at 23-22 following a Williams kill. The Bearcats continued to battle, but Thiel ultimately escaped with a 27-25 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Tomcats carried that momentum into the second set, taking an early lead before Saint Vincent battled back to pull within one at 16-15. Thiel responded by scoring nine of the final 12 points to secure the 25-18 victory and take a commanding 2-0 lead.
In the third set, Thiel jumped out to an early advantage before Saint Vincent attempted to mount another comeback. The Bearcats pulled within two at 20-18, but the Tomcats closed out the set, 25-19, to secure the straight-set victory.
Saint Vincent will return to PAC action on Wednesday, Oct. 7, welcoming Washington & Jefferson College to Latrobe for a 7 p.m. matchup.
