LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 4) – The Saint Vincent women's basketball team led after the opening quarter, but Waynesburg University used a strong middle stretch and a big fourth quarter to earn a 77-68 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory Wednesday evening at the Robert S. Carey Center.
Saint Vincent moves to 14-6 overall and 9-2 in PAC play, while Waynesburg improves to 10-10 and 6-5 in conference action.
Saint Vincent came out sharp early, building a 22-12 advantage after one quarter, but the Yellow Jackets responded with a 21-11 second quarter to pull in front at halftime, 33-33. The teams continued to trade momentum in the third, with Waynesburg edging the period 20-19 before closing the game with a 24-16 fourth quarter to seal the road win.
The Bearcats were led by
Makenna Maier and
Camdon Bashor, who scored 17 points apiece. Maier went 6-of-12 from the floor and added eight rebounds, while Bashor shot 7-of-10, grabbed six boards, and recorded three assists.
Emerson Peffer added 11 points off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting, and
Olivia Yancy chipped in 10 points as Saint Vincent finished with 32 points in the paint and 12 fast-break points.
Waynesburg was paced by Mia Henkins' 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while Kalista Friday added 16 points and helped spark the Yellow Jackets' offense from deep. Kara McFadden contributed 11 points, as Waynesburg knocked down 10 three-pointers and won the rebounding battle 42-35.
Waynesburg shot 44.8% from the field and 37.0% from three, while Saint Vincent finished at 41.5% overall and 23.8% from beyond the arc. The game featured 12 lead changes and three ties in a back-and-forth PAC contest.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, February 7 with a road PAC matchup at Thiel. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Greenville on Saturday afternoon.
