SELINSGROVE, Pa. (March 14) – The Saint Vincent College men's lacrosse team dropped a 12-11 double overtime non-conference matchup to Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon.
With the result, the Bearcats moved to 3-4 overall. Saint Vincent led by as many as three goals in the fourth quarter, but Susquehanna closed the game with a late push before scoring the winner in the second overtime period.
The two teams traded goals throughout the opening quarter. Susquehanna struck first on an extra-man tally at the 5:23 mark, but
Jonathan Nagy answered just 25 seconds later off an assist from
Liam McCall.
After the River Hawks regained the lead,
Neal Ritchie scored off a feed from
Ryan Rosenberger to even the game at 2-2 by the end of the first.
Saint Vincent used a strong second quarter to build its advantage.
Ryan Rosenberger opened the period with a goal from
Max Radcliffe at 10:57, and after Susquehanna answered with two straight scores,
Connor Smith tied the game at 4-4 on an assist from
Owen Rogers.
Rosenberger scored again at 4:27, and
Calvin Rose added an unassisted goal with 2:07 left in the half to give the Bearcats a 6-4 lead at the break.
Susquehanna responded in the third quarter with three unanswered goals to take a 7-6 lead, but
Luca Blevins found the back of the net at the 4:23 mark off a helper from Nagy to tie the score at 7-7 heading into the fourth.
The Bearcats surged back in the opening minutes of the fourth.
Connor Smith scored off an assist from Ritchie at 11:20, Nagy followed just 11 seconds later with an unassisted goal, and Rose made it a 10-7 Saint Vincent lead with 7:34 to play.
Susquehanna answered with three consecutive goals in a span of just over two minutes to knot the game at 10-10, but Rose completed his hat trick with 1:55 remaining off an assist from Rosenberger to put the Bearcats back in front.
The River Hawks, however, tied the contest with 40 seconds left in regulation and eventually scored the game-winner at 2:40 of the second overtime period.
Rose led the Bearcats with a hat trick, while Smith, Rosenberger and Nagy each scored twice. Rosenberger also added two assists for a team-high four points, while Nagy finished with three points on two goals and an assist.
Ritchie totaled a goal and an assist, Rogers dished out two assists, and McCall, Radcliffe and Blevins each added one point.
Defensively,
Mason Krabbe collected a team-best 12 ground balls, won 15-of-25 faceoffs and caused two turnovers.
Zander Vetter added four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Nagy chipped in four ground balls.
Garrett Ritts made 15 saves in goal for Saint Vincent.
As a team, Saint Vincent held a 41-38 edge in ground balls and won the faceoff battle, 16-10. The Bearcats finished with 47 total shots, 19 shots on goal, went 14-for-17 on clears and were 0-for-3 on extra-man opportunities. Susquehanna posted 52 shots, 27 shots on goal, went 17-for-22 on clears and converted 1-of-2 extra-man chances.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, March 18 with a home non-conference matchup against John Carroll. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at UPMC Field on Wednesday night.
