Baseball drops extra inning matchup against Concordia

DAVENPORT, Fla. (Mar. 2)- The Saint Vincent baseball team lost in a 12-inning thriller to Concordia College (Minnesota) on Monday afternoon.

It was a pitchers duel the whole way through as the Bearcats held a 1-0 lead through seven innings after a dominant start from freshman Jason Forgey.

Concordia eventually tied the game at one in the eighth, but SVC gained the lead right back in the bottom of the eighth. Once again, Concordia tied the game in the ninth and held the Bearcats to send it to extras. After a scoreless opening two frames in extra's the Cobbers scored two in the 12th and that was all they needed to hold on for the comeback victory.

In his first career collegiate start, Forgey stole the show for Saint Vincent. The freshman tossed 7.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits. He also struck out three Cobbers, while walking just one, picking up the no decision.

Jacob Auld took the loss on the mound in relief for SVC. He pitched 3.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, while striking out three batters. Eric Harris, Anderson Ford, and Gavin Switzer all tossed scoreless innings in relief as well.

Offensively, Traynor Janosko went 2-5 with a run scored for the Bearcats. Dylan Schmude, Lane Golkosky, Nolan Hurd, and Auld all recorded one hit each as well. Isiah Petty had SVC's lone RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly that gave SVC the lead in the eighth inning.

After a scoreless opening four and a half innings, Saint Vincent struck first. With Janosko on second base, Schmude hit an infield single to first and on the throw, Janosko was able to slide in safely, knocking the ball out of the catchers glove to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.

That 1-0 lead would hold until the eighth inning when Concordia tied it at 1-1. However, in the bottom of the inning coming off the bench, Petty delivered an RBI-sac fly to center field, scoring Schmude to give SVC a 2-1 lead heading into the ninth.

Once again, the Cobbers found a way to tie the game at 2-2 and send it to extra innings.

Concordia had the bulk of scoring opportunities in extra innings. In the 12th, the Cobbers capitalized on those opportunities with two runs.

Saint Vincent returns to action tomorrow, Tuesday, March 3 taking on Bluffton at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
