Henderson's walk off salvages season opening doubleheader split for softball

CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 1)- The Saint Vincent College softball team split their season opening doubleheader in Florida.

In the opener, the Bearcats fell by a score of 5-1 to Wentworth. Alyssa Henderson helped salvaged the split for SVC delivering a walkoff double in an 11-10 win over Emmanuel College in game two.

Game 1- Wentworth 5, Saint Vincent 1
Wentworth controlled the game in its entirety in the season opener for the Bearcats.

Wentworth scored four in the second and added another run in the fourth to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Saint Vincent's lone run of the game came in the sixth inning.

Dakota Hershberger and Shayna Perigo led Saint Vincent with two hits each. Mackenzie Favero, Emily Dudenhoeffer, Abby Bauer, and Samantha Farrell all recorded one hit each for SVC as well.

Mya McHugh took the loss in the circle for SVC, pitching two innings, while allowing four runs on three hits. Natalie Bizup pitched four innings in relief, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out one batter as well.

Perigo drove in Hershberger in the sixth inning for SVC's lone run of the game.

Game 2- Saint Vincent 11, Emmanuel 10
It was an exciting finale to the Bearcats doubleheader on opening day.

Trailing by one in the seventh inning, Alyssa Henderson stepped up to the plate and delivered a walk-off two-RBI double for the Bearcats.

It was an offensive explosion for both teams as they combined for 30 hits (15 each). Henderson led the way for SVC going 3-5 with the two game winning RBI's.

Hershberger, Perigo, Bauer, and Eva Farone all added two hits each for Saint Vincent as well. Favero, Dudenhoeffer, and Josey Michalski all recorded one hit each in the SVC victory as well.

Farone picked up the victory for SVC in the circle, pitching one scoreless inning. She struck out two batters over the course of the inning.

Saint Vincent returns to action tomorrow, Monday, March 2 with another doubleheader in Florida. The Bearcats will take on Simmons University first at 1:30 p.m. before taking on Elizabethtown at 4 p.m.
