NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Mar. 24) — The Saint Vincent College men's tennis team picked up a 4-3 Presidents' Athletic Conference road victory over Westminster College on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Bearcats improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in PAC play, earning their fifth consecutive victory.
Saint Vincent took control early by sweeping doubles play to earn the match's first point. At No. 1 doubles,
Blaise Bukovac and
Braden Yokopenic earned a 6-3 win, while
Brady Johnson and
Matthew Sadusky posted a 6-2 victory at No. 2.
Kyle Murray made his return to the as he and
Julien Vonovier completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
In singles action, the Bearcats secured three more points to clinch the team victory. Yokopenic was dominant at No. 1 singles, earning a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set win, while Bukovac followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2. Johnson added Saint Vincent's fourth point at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Westminster claimed wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles, but Saint Vincent's sweep of doubles and strong play at the top and bottom of the singles lineup proved to be the difference in the 4-3 final.
Sadusky fell 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3,
J.T. Gockel dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 4, and
Timothy Jakubek was edged 7-5, 7-5 at No. 6.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Friday, March 27 with a road PAC matchup at Franciscan. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in Steubenville on Friday.
