Bearcats surge past Allegheny for 14-6 home win

LATROBE, Pa. (March 28) – The Saint Vincent College men's lacrosse team scored the game's first seven goals and never looked back Saturday evening, earning a 14-6 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over Allegheny College at UPMC Field.
 
With the win, the Bearcats improved to 6-4 overall and 4-0 in PAC play, while the Gators fell to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
 
Saint Vincent controlled the opening quarter from the outset. Connor Smith started the scoring at the 13:15 mark off an assist from Max Radcliffe, before adding another less than three minutes later on a feed from Ryan Rosenberger.
 
Owen Rogers followed with an extra-man goal, Jonathan Nagy scored off an assist from Rogers, Neal Ritchie found the back of the net on a helper from Nagy, Calvin Rose added an unassisted tally, and Nagy capped the period with a goal with just five seconds left to give the Bearcats a commanding 7-0 lead after one.
 
The Bearcats pushed the margin to 9-0 early in the second quarter on goals by Smith and Rosenberger, but Allegheny answered with four straight goals to trim the deficit to 9-4.
 
Saint Vincent halted the run late in the half when Smith scored a man-up goal off an assist from Rogers with 2:09 remaining, sending the Bearcats into halftime with a 10-4 advantage.
 
After the break, Saint Vincent reasserted control. Radcliffe opened the third-quarter scoring with an unassisted goal at 5:37, and Reed Hunt followed just over a minute later with another unassisted score to make it 12-4.
 
Allegheny scored once later in the period and added an early fourth-quarter goal to get within 12-6, but Nagy scored off an assist from Cole Vollero with 8:05 to play, and Gavin Smallwood added the final goal of the day with 6:09 left to seal the 14-6 victory.
 
Smith led the Bearcats offensively with four goals and one assist for a team-high five points. Nagy added three goals and one assist, while Rogers and Rosenberger each finished with one goal and two assists.
 
Hunt and Radcliffe both recorded a goal and an assist, and Rose, Ritchie, and Smallwood also scored in the win. Mason Krabbe chipped in an assist as well.
 
Krabbe also controlled play at the faceoff stripe, winning 17 of 22 draws while collecting a game-high 12 ground balls. Rose added six ground balls, while Nagy had three and Hunt, Zander Vetter, Ryan Rutherford, and Garrett Ritts each picked up two.
 
Cam Herring led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers, while Tony Ferreira and Landon Flock each caused two. In goal, Ritts earned the win after making three saves over the opening 45 minutes, and Jack Zayas stopped two shots over the final 15 minutes.
 
As a team, Saint Vincent held advantages in shots (47-23), shots on goal (28-11), ground balls (39-23), faceoffs (18-6), and clearing percentage, converting 21 of 25 clear attempts. The Bearcats also went 2-for-3 on extra-man opportunities and forced 31 Allegheny turnovers.
 
Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, April 1 with a road matchup at Bethany. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
